TTR 51 - Roseobacter
Research Projects
Transregional Collaborative research centre (TTR 51)
Project Description
In the framework of the CRC TRR 51, entitled "Ecology, Physiology and Molecular Biology of the Roseobacter Clade: Towards a Systems Biology Understanding of a Globally Important Clade of Marine Bacteria", scientists from Oldenburg, Braunschweig and Göttingen work on one of the most important groups of bacteria in the sea..
The often reddish-pigmented microorganisms occur in virtually all marine ecosystems and even dominate some of them. The bacteria live in the open water and sediments of the oceans. They can be found on biotic and abiotic surfaces, co-existing or living in symbiotic relationships with other marine organisms such as algae.
They play an important role in the global cycling of elements. In addition, the physiology of the Roseobacter group is very versatile, thus providing various compounds of biotechnological interest.
The major aim of the current work is to understand the evolutionary, genetic and physiological foundation of the bacteria's payoff.
