Hardware security key (YubiKey)
Hardware security key (YubiKey)
A hardware security key, such as a YubiKey, can be used as a second factor for authentication. It supports several authentication methods, two of which are currently available as options with us. The most commonly used feature is known for the fact that, after setup and during login, you simply touch the golden contact surface of the YubiKey once to provide the second factor. Technically, this is based on the “FIDO2” protocol.
An alternative to this is using the YubiKey’s one-time password (TOTP) feature. This can only be used with a separate application, since the configured one-time password secret—similar to the previously mentioned option—is stored on the YubiKey itself, and the one-time passwords can therefore only be read using a separate application.
Hardware security key ("YubiKey") for university employees
All employees of the University receive a YubiKey as a security key:
What happens if I lose the security key?
Please contact the IT service desk immediately to have your YubiKey temporarily or permanently blocked. This will prevent an attacker from being able to use your YubiKey.
After reporting the loss, if another 2nd factor has been set up in addition to the YubiKey, you can also try to set it up again yourself in the 2FA portal - see here
