17 new apprentices at the university in 2026

This week, 17 young people have started their apprenticeships at the university. The range of apprenticeship roles is broad – spanning everything from administration to the trades and laboratory work.

“Excellent research and teaching don’t just happen by themselves. It is the people in our workshops, laboratories, offices and archives who keep the campus running every day. A strong team, which is excellently complemented by our new apprentices,” said Jörg Stahlmann, Vice-President for Administration and Finance, during the apprentices’ induction days. He noted that entering the world of work is one of the most important steps for teenagers and young adults. “We take our responsibility as a training organisation very seriously and are committed to providing expert guidance, varied tasks and modern working conditions,” Stahlmann continued.

This year, the following are starting their apprenticeships: four trainee electronics technicians for equipment and systems, three administrative assistants, two chemical laboratory technicians, two IT specialists, two precision mechanics, two gardeners (specialising in perennials and in gardening and landscaping), one trainee in media and information services (specialising in library science) and one apprentice in media design for image and sound.

The University of Oldenburg offers attractive apprenticeship opportunities across a total of 13 professional fields and, with around 3,000 employees in research, teaching, technical services and administration, is one of the largest employers in the north-west.

Vocational Training Day 2025

The focus of this year’s Vocational Training Day was on shared experiences as a group and a team

The weather threw a spanner in the works – instead of gathering as a group for an outdoor event in the nearby Wildenloh woodland, the participants were suddenly called upon to demonstrate their dexterity and manual skills in the University’s open-air hall. Guided by two external trainers, the 32 apprentices and trainers from the University of Oldenburg were set the task of building a marble run within a specified time frame using available materials such as pipes, cable ties, rope and square timber. In the process, everyone learnt – in an entertaining and positively challenging way – to recognise and apply different resources and skills together, to improve cross-task communication, and to better assess strategic decisions and their implications.

The day was rounded off with a barbecue together on Küpkersweg on the Wechloy campus, where the sun even made an appearance again.

15 new apprentices at the university in 2025

This week, the University of Oldenburg welcomed 15 young people who are starting their training at the university. “We are one of the largest employers in the region and now offer exciting training opportunities in 13 different occupational fields – for example in engineering, administration and the skilled trades,” said Meik Möllers, Head of Division 4 – Facility management, at the official induction ceremony for the apprentices. Starting a career is one of the most important steps for teenagers and young adults. “That is why we attach great importance to providing a varied and sound apprenticeship programme that equips young people for the future,” Möllers continued. The university is looking forward to providing dedicated support to the new apprentices in the workshops, laboratories and offices. In doing so, it is also making an important contribution to alleviating the shortage of skilled workers.

This year, two IT specialists, two precision mechanics, two chemical laboratory assistants, three administrative assistants and three electronics technicians for equipment and systems are starting their training. In addition, the university is training one animal keeper, one gardener and one events technician.

Vocational training day on Heligoland 2024

Many experienced Heligoland for the first time

58 apprentices and trainers from the university and OFFIS spent this year's Vocational Training Day (17 October 2024) on the island of Helgoland. Even the crossing on the catamaran was a real experience. They explored the small island with its great traditions and moving history in groups. Many were experiencing Heligoland for the first time. It was a great day, the weather played along and everyone was thrilled.

20 new apprentices at the University of 2024

This week, the University of Oldenburg is welcoming 20 young people who are starting an apprenticeship at the university. "As one of the largest employers in the region, the university also offers exciting prospects in vocational training, for example in technology, administration and skilled trades," said Jörg Stahlmann, Vice President for Administration and Finance, at the official introduction. Entering the world of work is one of the most important steps for young people and young adults. "That's why we attach great importance to a diverse and well-founded education," Stahlmann continued. The university is looking forward to supporting the new apprentices in the workshops, laboratories and offices. This also contributes to the development of skilled labour.

This year, two IT specialists, two precision mechanics and three electronics technicians for devices and systems are starting their training. The university is also training one pool attendant, two gardeners, three administrative assistants, three media and information services specialists and two image and sound media designers.

Vocational Training Day 2023

Climate and animal protection

The Vocational Training Day on 18 October 2023 brought 41 apprentices and trainers from the university and OFFIS to Bremerhaven. To deepen the content of the Vocational Training Day in 2022 with the motto "Shaping the future in a resource-conscious way", this day focused on "Climate and animal protection". After an exciting and moving lecture, there was plenty of time to explore the Klimahaus and the Zoo am Meer in small groups.
