Biava Mobility Grant
Biava Mobility Grant
The Floyd and Lili Biava Foundation aims to promote the mobility of students and young academics who are spending a study, teaching or research stay abroad (preferably in the USA). As part of the foundation's purpose, scholarship holders receive a grant of EUR 3,000 to cover travel and/or accommodation costs.
Application requirements: Who can be sponsored?
Applications are open to regularly enrolled students, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers at the University of Oldenburg who fulfil the following criteria:
- You are a student* or early career researcher* at Faculty II: Computing Science and Economics, School V - School of Mathematics and Science or School VI - School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
- The programme involves a study, teaching or research stay abroad of at least 3 months.
- The intended stay abroad begins in the second half of the year of the call for applications.
Tender and selection procedure
The Biava Mobility Scholarship is advertised once a year from 15 February to 31 March via various channels. After submitting the online application form, applicants will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt instructing them to upload all required application documents to the Uni-Cloud. Following a formal review of the submitted documents, applicants will be informed of the status of their application by the end of April.
The scholarship is awarded by the Board of the Floyd and Lili Biava Foundation. The selection committee will meet in June this year. Applicants will be informed in advance of when they can expect a decision.
The selection committee awards marks based on predefined criteria and draws up a ranking of the applicants. As this is, amongst other things, a merit-based scholarship, the applicants’ academic performance (average grade as per their current transcript) is a selection criterion. However, in addition to credits, the students’ motivation is a particularly decisive factor for the selection committee. Applicants should therefore address the following aspects in their personal statement:
- Reasons for applying for the Biava mobility grant
- Academic and personal motivation for a period of study abroad, including reasons for choosing the host country and host institution
- The relevance of the period abroad to their studies and/or future career
- Study, teaching or research plan
The selection committee also places great value on voluntary work and takes special personal circumstances into account. The mobility grant is primarily intended to support students and early-career researchers who have not previously received any grants.
Applicants will be informed of the Foundation Board’s decision shortly after the selection meeting. Due to the diversity of the selection criteria, their relative weighting and the need to ensure absolute confidentiality in the selection committee’s decision-making process, the reasons for the decisions are not explained in detail to the applicants.
Successful applicants will, upon submission of their written declaration of acceptance, receive an invitation to the official presentation of the scholarship certificate by the President of the University of Oldenburg, Prof. Dr Ralph Bruder.
By accepting the mobility grant, scholarship holders undertake to submit a detailed experience report (including a reference to the scholarship!) to the Board of the Floyd and Lili Biava Foundation upon their return from abroad and to be available for a brief discussion at the next board meeting.
No recourse to legal action is permitted.
