Teaching at the Institute of Chemistry

The Institute of Chemistry is responsible for the majority of teaching activities within the chemistry programmes. In addition to traditional teaching formats such as lectures and seminars, practical laboratory courses and experimental lectures take up a significant portion of class time.

In the Bachelor's programmes, the essential theoretical foundations of the field are defined along with an appropriate practical and research orientation. An extensive professionalisation area (45 credit points) with a wide range of elective courses allows students to complement their own competency profiles by attending events offered by other departments of the university, thus enabling them to design their course of study individually and reflectively. Similarly, in the Master's programmes, students are offered the opportunity to independently shape the curriculum according to their own interests: with the exception of the final module, all modules in the programme are elective. Consequently, students can pursue a broadly defined education in the field of chemistry during this stage of their studies or choose a specific area of interest offered by the institute.

In accordance with the central idea of the unity of research and teaching (Humboldtian educational ideal), students are consistently involved in research activities of the institute throughout their studies, particularly in their final exams. The technical and analytical equipment, as well as the laboratories, are available to students for both their studies and their own research endeavors. Moreover, large equipment can be utilized on an individual basis. Training, continuous supervision and guidance, as well as support and encouragement in practical work, are provided by the institute's staff.

Additionally, the field of chemistry is offered as a minor subject in various other programmes (e.g., environmental sciences, biology, physics and medicine). Furthermore, the institute's teaching is offered in the professionalisation areas of other programs with multiple modules, including those focused on sustainable resources and industry-related modules in collaboration with industrial chemists.

Further information about specific courses and teaching offerings can be found on the websites of the individual research groups.
