The application and selection process is as follows:

1. Applications are only accepted during the application deadlines. The cover letter must be sent to the university management, but the documents must be submitted - in digital form via Stud.IP - to the Scholarships service centre.
2. After the application deadline, the applications are checked by the Scholarships service centre and any missing documents are requested, usually by email.
3. The university then makes a selection of eligible applicants. Their documents are submitted to the Board of the Dr Dettling Foundation for a decision.
4. Finally, the applicants receive an acceptance or rejection letter from the Dr Dettling Foundation.
5. Funding begins at the start of the next semester and usually lasts no longer than six months.
6. The scholarships are ceremoniously awarded at a small awards ceremony.
