University Society in dialogue with the deans
On 7 June 1995, a meeting took place at the University between the Board of the University Society and the Deans of the University. The aim of the meeting was to improve the relationship between the university and the public. In his welcoming address, the Chair of the University Society, Peter Waskönig, called on the University to present itself to the public more strongly than before. It must continue to work on improving its image.
It became clear from contributions to the discussion that the university society and deans know too little about each other. These information deficits must be reduced. It was agreed to present the research programmes of the individual departments to the public. To this end, the University Society has drawn up a questionnaire, which all deans have since completed. All deans have named the focal points of their work, lecture topics and target groups of interest to them. The University Society will now draw up a programme with the aim of presenting the University's diverse teaching and research activities to the public.
An initiative to bring company representatives and the university together is another activity of the University Society. It also aims to open up the university to the business world in particular. Although there are already numerous contacts between companies and the university, it has to be recognised time and again that there is a lack of information on both sides. The University Society therefore endeavours to improve contact with the public. The University is given the opportunity to present itself and to realise its claim of being there for the region.
The University Society's initiative must not be limited to one-off campaigns. Discussions with the deans or with representatives of the business community should become an ongoing dialogue. The University Society sees itself as a mediator and medium in this matter. In this way, it also hopes to gain even more support through additional memberships. Last but not least, it is endeavouring to strengthen its financial basis in order to promote even more special scientific activities in teaching and research where funds from other sources cannot be used. Outstanding funding programmes include the Gerhard Wachsmann Prize, endowed with 5,000 marks, and the Wolfgang Schulenberg Scholarship, endowed with a total of 15,000 marks, which is specifically intended to promote lectures abroad. In addition, the University Society makes numerous donations each year to support individual scientific projects.
