Non-discriminatory language has the potential not only to signal equal opportunities, but also to actively strengthen them. How gender-sensitive, barrier-free communication can look in practice is the subject of controversial debate in society, meaning that many questions are still unanswered and no uniformly recognised solutions exist.

In order to ensure respectful language between people of all genders and to promote the equal participation of all university members, staff and guests, we would therefore like to point out some valuable suggestions and recommendations.

The principles of gender-sensitive communication have been adopted by the UniversitySenate and Presidential Board and are enshrined in the "Guideline on Gender-Sensitive Language and Communication at the University of Oldenburg".
