Summary: The aim of the project is to conduct a population survey in the municipalities and towns of Papenburg, Westoverledingen, Leer, Moormeerland and Emden, which have joined together to form the "Region east of the Ems" (ROEDE). The aim of the association is to jointly apply for recognition as a European LEADER region in the 2014-2020 funding period. The project includes the creation of questionnaires, the implementation of the survey, the statistical analysis of the data obtained and its preparation and presentation. The project is being carried out in co-operation with RaUm, Bad Zwischenahn, and ARSU GmbH, Oldenburg.

The merger serves the joint application for recognition as a European LEADER region in the 2014-2020 funding period. The project includes the preparation of the questionnaires, the implementation of the survey, the statistical evaluation of the data obtained and its preparation and presentation. The project is being carried out in co-operation with the RaUm office, Bad Zwischenahn, and ARSU GmbH, Oldenburg.

Project: Climate protection sub-concept for the municipality of Berne

Summary: The aim of the project is to methodically develop the elaboration of a sub-concept which, as a well-founded expert opinion, is intended to show strategic decisions of the municipality and municipal development possibilities in the area of land designation for renewable energies. Raising public awareness of climate protection and the targeted development of the potential for renewable energies in the area of conflict with nature conservation, private interests and municipal development intentions will be the subject of the study. Project: Development of mission statements for sustainable spatial development in the German-Dutch border region

Summary: The aim of the project is to develop mission statements for sustainable spatial development using transdisciplinary research methods with a particular focus on stakeholder-based approaches to analysis. Specifically, the project supports the development of mission statements for updating the Cross-Border Spatial Development Concept (GREK) for the area of the German-Dutch Spatial Planning Commission (UK Nord). The centre of the project is to align the mission statements more closely with the principles of sustainable spatial development. The scientific work is carried out by a student project group with a Bachelor's degree under the scientific guidance of the responsible lecturers.

Brief description: The aim of the project is to further develop the methodology for drawing up an integrated climate protection concept for the working area of the Bremerhaven Regional Forum. This is a voluntary association of the city of Bremerhaven, the two districts of Cuxhaven and Wesermarsch and the municipalities belonging to the districts. On their behalf, in co-operation with ARSU GmbH, Oldenburg, and the planning office RaUm, Bad Zwischenahn, a status quo report on energy consumption is being compiled and, based on this, measures for active climate protection are being developed with a focus on energy saving and reducing CO2 emissions (see www.bremerhaven.de/meer-erleben/regionalforum-bremerhaven/unsere -projekte/integriertes-klimaschutzkonzept/).

Project: Strategies for sustainable tourism in the Peak District National Park, England

Summary: The aim of the project, which is being carried out jointly with colleagues at the School of Spatial Sciences at the University of Groningen (Netherlands), is to investigate concepts and strategies for sustainable tourism development in the area of the English Peak District National Park and their implementation using selected examples. One sub-project is dedicated to the establishment of the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark, which was carried out in co-operation with the member businesses of the Quality Mark. The results of empirical surveys on site served as the basis for the preparation of a master's thesis by Lisa-Sophie Pünjer in the master's programme in Landscape Ecology at the University of Oldenburg. An international specialised publication on further project results is currently in preparation.

Summary: The climate protection concept is intended to serve the municipality as a framework and guide for future decisions and take into account both the federal government's goals for the expansion of renewable energies and the interests of the various local stakeholders. A particular challenge is seen in the identification of previously untapped potential in the area of renewable energies, energy feed-in and increased efficiency (see www.emstek.de /index.php?id=361). The concept is being developed in co-operation with RaUm, Bad Zwischenahn.

Summary: The aim of the project is to develop a climate protection concept that will serve as a well-founded expert opinion on strategic decisions by the municipality and municipal development opportunities, such as the designation of areas for commercial and residential construction. Another aim of the climate protection concept is to raise the population's awareness of climate protection and to highlight their own opportunities to save energy, both in terms of investments and in the personal sphere (see www.lastrup.de/ge meinde/aktuelle_meldung_08.02.2013_1.htm).

Summary: The aim of IMPLAN was to analyse the impacts of climate change and the resulting adaptation requirements in dialogue with experts from the other KLIFF research topics and with representatives of planning practice with regard to their relevance for spatial planning. Based on this, corresponding recommendations for action were formulated for selected fields of action in spatial planning in Lower Saxony (coastal protection and water management in lowland areas, inland water management, settlement and infrastructure development, protection of biodiversity, agriculture and forestry, tourism) for planning practice at state and regional level.
