Welcome to Oldenburg
Study plan/structure B.A.
There are different types of modules in the B.A. degree programme in German Studies at the University of Oldenburg. You can find a superordinate list of the individual modules in the study programme plan:
Basic modules
The modules ger010, ger020 and ger033 form the basic modules. They are made up of various individual units such as lectures, seminars and tutorials.
ger010: Language and Culture (linguistics lecture)
ger020: Literature and Culture (literary studies lecture)
ger033: Acquisition and Teaching (didactics lecture)
The ger010 Language and Culture module is made up of a lecture(VL), a seminar(SE) and atutorial (TU), as is ger020. All individual units of these modules each comprise 2 semester hours per week(SWS). The tutorials in the ger010 and ger020 modules are compulsory.
In module ger033, you will attend a lecture of 4 SWS and a seminar of 2 SWS.
Advanced modules
The advanced modules are also divided into individual units such as seminars (SE) and tutorials (UE). The advanced modules comprise the modules ger211 to ger291.
The advanced modules usually consist of a seminar and an exercise or 2 seminars. In this case, the exercise is the applied part of the seminar, while the theoretical foundations are created in the seminar part. These two units of the module each comprise 2 SWS and can only be taken and completed together in the same semester. An exception is ger231 Older Language and Literature, which is offered across semesters.
Study plan/structure M.A.
An overview of all modules of the M.A. German Studies can be found in the study programme plan:
You must take four subject-specific modules in the M.A. German Studies programme. These modules can have either a linguistic or a literary focus. The module numbers are ger880 (linguistics) and ger890 (literary studies).
It is recommended to take one module in linguistics (ger880) and one module in literary studies (ger890).
Multiple enrolments are possible as long as the modules differ in terms of content.
Each module consists of two seminars (SE + SE) or a seminar and a lecture (SE + VL). The module duration can extend over two semesters (see course schedule). Within each module, self-study is part of the programme. The type of self-study is agreed individually with the lecturers of the seminars.
Seminar, exercise and module: What is what?
A module is a superordinate element of a thematic focus. Such a module can consist of different parts. As a rule, the module is completed with an overall grade, which is made up of various partial achievements.
In German Studies, such modules are made up of different forms of teaching. The following forms exist:
- Lecture
- seminar
- tutorial
- tutorial
Lectures are courses in which lecturers give presentations on specific topics.
A seminar usually takes place in a smaller course. In a seminar, students work independently on certain topics under the guidance of lecturers and discuss them together. A seminar usually makes up the theoretical part of a module.
In German studies, an exercise usually takes place in conjunction with a seminar. The main purpose of the exercise is to independently apply topics that have already been worked on and thus forms the practical part of a module.
A tutorial is usually given by older students in a small group. It serves to consolidate lecture content and is partly voluntary and partly compulsory.
