One evening, eight pubs, 16 talks: on Thursday 10 September, ‘Hirn vom Hahn – Wissen frisch gezapft!’ enters its sixth round. In a cosy atmosphere, researchers from Oldenburg give their audience engaging and entertaining talks on their current projects. There will be two talks in each pub, with the first starting at 7.30 pm and the second at 8.45 pm. For 20 minutes, the researchers will discuss current scientific developments in their field, share anecdotes from their day-to-day work and present fascinating research findings. Afterwards, the audience has the opportunity to ask questions and engage in more in-depth discussion.
The range of topics is as diverse as the backgrounds of the participating scientists. Topics include, for example, the globalised world of shipping, autonomous driving, the influence of our breathing on our wellbeing, the potential of steam power stations, and the consequences of the so-called ‘baseball bat years’. The range of specialist fields extends from neuroscience, marine research and history to computer science, energy research and medicine. Three talks will be held in English.
The participating pubs and bars are: Artischocke Weinbar, Buddel Jungs Bar, Garda Gourmet Weinbar, Marvin’s, Karin’s Kneipe, Ule, The Pub, and UmBAUbar. Between the two talks, those interested will have plenty of time to move on to another of the participating pubs and bars. Admission is free and no registration is required. It is recommended to arrive early.
‘Hirn vom Hahn’ is a series of events organised by the Oldenburg Network for Science Communication (OLWIK). OLWIK is an association of academic and research institutions in Oldenburg. It has set itself the task of making scientific work accessible to the public. To this end, OLWIK organises events and produces the podcast ‘Hirn gehört: Oldenburger Wissensschnack’ featuring researchers from Oldenburg and the surrounding region.
