      abstract = {Empirical research on the diffusion of environmental product and service innovations has significant limits: almost all investigations focus on just a single sector or technology, usually energy, and concern a small number of diffusion cases. Therefore, it is hardly possible to generalize across sectors and to identify potential differences between sectors. We address this research gap with an investigation of a large sample of 130 diffusion cases from 11 different sectors. We apply a new mixed-method approach of statistical analysis and qualitative extreme case analysis. We provide insights on the differences in dissemination rates and knowledge on sector-specific factors. This helps to explain diffusion processes and design effective sector-specific transition policies. The concept of explanation range of factors clarifies the role and relevance of different diffusion factors and opens up avenues for further research on environmental innovation. Based on our findings, it can be concluded that some factors explain diffusion in (almost) all cases (high explanatory range), some only in specific sectors (medium explanatory range), and some merely in individual cases (low explanatory range).},

      abstract = {Entrepreneurs and start-ups are key actors in implementing environmental innovation and new approaches in cleaner production. Therefore, the integration of sustainability considerations in early phases of a new venture is important. Insights on how this can be effectively implemented in start-up support systems are scarce and represent a research gap. Business plan competitions (BPCs) constitute an important element in entrepreneurial support systems, and are a powerful force in driving entrepreneurial activity. Up till now, it is unclear whether BPCs can actually influence the sustainability orientation of participating entrepreneurs and the sustainability performance of their ventures. The purpose of this work is to clarify whether the integration of sustainability goals and considerations into generic BPCs has an impact on the business activities of participating entrepreneurs and start-up teams. For our investigation we conducted a survey of the more than 1000 participants in the Business Plan Wettbewerb Berlin Brandenburg, which is the oldest and biggest generic business plan competition in Germany. For the analysis we use a structural equation model and apply the partial-least-squares method. Findings reveal that the promotion of sustainability in generic BPCs have an impact on the integration of sustainability in start-up business activity. Thus, from a sustainability point of view it makes sense to explicitly integrate sustainability into the concrete support offerings of generic BPCs. Our research contributes to cleaner production research by providing new insights on context factors in early (seed and start-up) phases of a new venture.},

      abstract = {While the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems is now a prominent topic and an important stream in entrepreneurship research, the question of how ecosystems can specifically promote sustainable entrepreneurship and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations is a neglected issue. With the papers in this special issue, we address this research gap, serving as a catalyst sparking more research at the nexus of contextualization of entrepreneurship and sustainability. This research has, since the 1990s, developed in three waves; the explicit linkage to SDGs and the investigation of impacts of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems in achieving societal and environmental goals might be considered as the “fourth wave.” We first introduce relevant research streams and concepts for investigating sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems. Then, we explain why this special issue and its articles represent a fourth wave in entrepreneurial research (“sustainability”). Thereafter, we provide an overview of the papers of this special issue and then end with a brief consideration of future research demands.},

      abstract = {State universities are increasingly being transformed from institutions with traditional teaching and research responsibilities to have a third, societal role in sustainable regional and economic development. In doing so, universities support knowledge spillovers to improve sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems that benefit economic revitalization or further development of regions. At the same time they promote stakeholder involvement in crucial governance processes at the regional level. Based on a comparative case study design building on three cases in Germany, our research analyses these interdependencies focussing on university-linked support programmes for sustainable entrepreneurship and the effects on sustainable regional development. Our findings provide a nuanced view clarifying the different roles universities have, how knowledge spillovers are created, and what outputs, outcomes, and effects are realized at the regional level and beyond. Specifically, we demonstrate that depending on the regional context, different configurations, pathways, and intervention points of universities may equally improve sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems.},

This is hindering collaboration, exchange, and learning about sustainability-oriented business models as well as the development of suitable and widely-accepted modelling tools. We contribute toward such a shared understanding based on a theoretical discussion of boundary-spanning and interactive business model development for sustainable value creation. The theoretical discussion feeds into a comparative analysis of the six currently available practitioner tools supporting the exploration and elaboration of sustain-ability-oriented business models. By synthesizing findings from theory and available tools, we define four guiding principles (sustainability-orientation, extended value creation, systemic thinking, and stakeholder integration) and four process-related criteria (reframing business model components, context-sensitive modelling, collaborative modelling, managing impacts and outcomes) for the development of sustainability-oriented business models.},

      abstract = {Recent studies suggest that a growing number of universities are embracing the notion that sustainability should and can be integrated into the university support system for entrepreneurship, or that sustainability activities should be implemented and promoted with entrepreneurial spirit. This finding relates positively to the demands by policy makers that sustainable entrepreneurship should be addressed in (higher) education, to prepare the mind-set of future “green entrepreneurs”. But there are hardly any insights concerning how an appropriate university system should be designed and which factors influence the emergence and implementation of university support systems for sustainable entrepreneurship. We address this research gap by means of a qualitative multi-case study approach. Based on 41 good practice examples, we carried out in-depth case studies investigating four universities based in the USA and Germany. Our results indicate that the four areas of potential influence derived from theory and the literature (environmental context, institutional framework, key persons and external interaction) are actually relevant. The case studies support the assumption that the role of key persons as initiators, promoters or networkers is of outstanding importance. In addition to the four areas of influence derived from theory and literature, the four case studies indicated that there are further relevant factors. It was possible to identify three additional fields of influence: (1) Core activities for developing university support systems (research or implementation projects, dialogue processes), (2) the organizational history and competencies background of universities and (3) student interest and demand. While the question why sustainable entrepreneurship should be supported by higher education institutions is clearly answered, there are hardly any insights concerning how an appropriate university system should be designed and which factors influence the emergence and implementation of university support systems for sustainable entrepreneurship.},

      abstract = {Currently there is an attention in research and practise on entrepreneurial ecosystems, and how these, often using incubators, could support sustainable development through new firm start-ups. Despite the popularity of incubators in the literature and practise, few studies have focused on sustainable incubators in general or, more specifically, on processes that ensure a steady flow of tenants. Thus, this paper investigates how sustainable incubators ensures their inflow of tenants, how they organize their activities and whether the incubator environment affect tenant recruitment. A case study approach analysing the sustainability oriented incubator Green Garage Berlin have been used to generate an understanding of selection and recruitment processes as well the influence of external environments. The results show that regional and inter-regional co-operation, together with a well-planned, structured pre-incubation process, are requirements for securing an inflow of tenants to sustainable incubators. Incubator reputation and sufficient long term funding is also a key to success. A good practice case as Green Garage cannot simply be replicated, but require openness to continue the learning process and adapting the knowledge to be transferred to local conditions.},

      abstract = {There is a growing political consensus about the necessity to decouple economic growth from environmental impacts. For a transition towards a green economy radical innovation plays a central role. Start-ups are key marketin the development and market introduction of radical sustainable innovation, but so far there is little research on the specific challenges and opportunities of “green” start-ups. In this conceptual paper, we bring together research and theory on entrepreneurship and innovation as well as sustainable business practice and ask why and how different types of “green” start-ups may encounter specific financing challenges and opportunities when developing their products/services. As existing typologies are too unspecific to properly explain the financing challenges and opportunities of green start-ups, we elaborate on these and develop a new typology of green start-ups. This typology will enable further empirical exploration of specific challenges and opportunities that such start-ups have when looking for finance.},

      abstract = {This article is based on the first study worldwide to analyze materials present in the equipment of data centers. The study develops a methodology that allows the calculation of the number of data centers of the various size classes and their average equipment with information technology (IT) components and infrastructure elements, such as air-conditioning systems and power supplies. This enables detailed statements to be made on the materials present in the equipment of approximately 53,000 data centers in Germany. In 2008, the total amount of materials in the equipment of data centers in Germany was 110,300 tonnes (t). IT equipment (servers, storage equipment, and network) accounted for 37,500 t (34\%), racks and containments for 30,700 t (28\%), cooling and air-conditioning systems for 12,000 t (11\%), and the power infrastructure for 30,000 t (27\%). A comprehensive analysis of the type of materials being used yielded the following values: Approximately 58,400 t of iron, 18,600 t of copper, 11,600 t of circuit boards, 11,100 t of plastics, 7,400 t of aluminum, and 6,500 t of miscellaneous materials were present in German data centers. The electronic material contained 1.8 t of gold, 7.5 t of silver, and 0.8 t of palladium. Because it can be assumed that prices for precious metals, and also for bulk metals, will continue to rise, the recovery of raw materials from the IT devices of data centers is an interesting option. Additionally, the development of appropriate product design and recycling strategies for servers and storage units should be implemented.},

      abstract = {Research on Open Innovation has increasingly emphasised the role of communities in creating, shaping and disseminating innovations. However, the comparability of many studies has been hampered by the lack of a precise definition of the community construct, and the research on Open Innovation has to date not been well connected to insights from research on the role of transformational leaders and the networking of champions and promotors across organisational boundaries. For this reason, this paper introduces a new construct of ‘innovation communities’ based on promotor theory, which it defines as ‘networks of promotors’. It proposes a comprehensive concept of the quality of interaction in innovation communities, and presents findings of three case studies, which explore the role of promotors and networks of promotors in Open Innovation. The case studies reveal that such transformational leaders as promotors, and especially their close and informal co-operation across functional and organisational boundaries, play a key role in Open Innovation.},

      abstract = {The environmental effects of e-commerce may be described in terms of first-, second-, and third-order effects. Data for these effects are scarce, partly because research on environmental effects of e-commerce and e-business is still in its infancy, although it is evolving very rapidly. Until now, positive environmental consequences of e-commerce have generally been coincidental. Two crucial questions that must be addressed are (1) How do we improve our understanding and management of the environmental effects of e-commerce? and (2) Which approaches are best suited to the development of sustainable e-solutions? Three approaches to developing sustainable e-commerce solutions are discussed: the extension of environmental performance measurement and management to e-commerce activities, the use of new cooperative forms of innovation management, and the provision of customer choice. Finally, an outlook on future research demands is presented. The technology itself (information and communication technologies, Internet) does not determine sustainability, but rather its design, use, and regulation does.},

Die Habilitationsschrift baut auf dem noch jungen Forschungszweig der interaktiven Innovationsforschung auf, sichtet relevante Prozessmodelle und Akteurskonzepte und nimmt eine interaktionsökonomische Fundierung von Innovationsprozessen vor. Auf dieser Basis entwickelt der Autor die Grundzüge einer Theorie des Creative Response, die die Aktivierung kreativer unternehmerischer Problemlösungskapazitäten durch produktive Akteursinteraktionen und -kooperationen sowie deren Einbettung in geeignete strukturelle und mentale Kontexte erklärt. Ein zentraler Bestandteil des Theorieansatzes ist das Konzept des Interpreneurship. Dieses beschreibt die unternehmerische Rolle im Innovationsprozess als die Erzeugung neuer mentaler, organisationaler, institutioneller und intertemporaler Verbindungen und als die Gestaltung und Nutzung von Akteursinteraktionen als Basis für die Entdeckung und Durchsetzung neuer Problemlösungen. Interpreneurship lässt sich damit sowohl als vernetzendes Unternehmertum als auch als Unternehmertum in Netzwerken charakterisieren. Fichter skizziert sechs zentrale Interpreneurship-Funktionen entlang des Innovationsprozesses und präzisiert diese mit Blick auf die Generierung und Durchsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsinnovationen. Die herausgearbeiteten Interpreneurship-Funktionen stellen endogene Kräfte der Entstehung und Durchsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsinnovationen dar. Anspruchsvolle internationale Umweltstandards eröffnen innovativen deut­ schen Produzenten von Umweltschutz-Technologien auf einem rasant wachsenden Weltmarkt beachtliche neue Geschäftsfelder und Potentiale. Die Politik kann hier flankierend zur Seite stehen, sei es mit Hilfe des umfangreichen außenwirtschaft­ lichen Förderinstrumentariums, sei es als Türöffner. Grüne Gründungen sind deshalb ein wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor für die Umweltinnovationspolitik. Die Studie zeigt, wo derzeit die Stärken und Schwächen bei der Förderung grüner Gründungen in Deutschland liegen und macht konkrete Verbesserungsvorschläge. Wichtig sind zum Beispiel spezielle Förderprogramme für grüne Gründungen, die Verbesserung der Finanzierung und der Abbau von Hindernissen bei der Markteinführung umweltfreundlicher Techniken und Produkte. Außerdem sollte der Nachhaltigkeitsgedanke konsequent in die allgemeine Förderung von Gründungen integriert werden, so dass sich alle neu gegründeten Unternehmen stärker auf Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit ausrichten.},
