In this lecture you will learn how what you hear is processed in the brain - from the first sound to understanding entire sentences. Seeing and hearing work closely together, and what you see also helps the brain to understand. Using modern imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, we can track which areas of the brain are active during hearing and comprehension. Using studies from the Hearing4all cluster of excellence in Oldenburg, I will show you what we have been able to observe in older people with and without hearing loss: How brain activity changes, which connections between brain regions become stronger or weaker - and when hearing loss also affects the structure of the brain.
