Professional and academic career

  • Passed the Abitur in May 1972 at Hölty Grammar School in Wunstorf (near Hanover).
  • Served in the Bundeswehr from July 1972 to March 1974.
  • Studied at the University of Göttingen (April 1974 to July 1981), with Slavic Linguistics as the main subject and English Linguistics and Slavic Literature as minors.
  • Master of Arts (Magister artium) in July 1981
  • From October 1981 to December 1986, research assistant at the same university on a third-party-funded lexicographical project on German loanwords in Polish.
  • July 1986: Awarded a Dr. phil. degree at the University of Göttingen in the above-mentioned subjects; thesis topic: Vowel Perception and Natural Phonology. A Contrastive Study of German and Polish.
  • From January 1987: Temporary Academic Councillor (position for early-career researchers) at the Department of Slavic Philology, University of Göttingen, with duties in research, teaching and administration.
  • From September 1990 to August 1992, held a postdoctoral research fellowship from the German Research Foundation (DFG).
  • June 1993: Habilitation in Slavic Philology (Linguistics) at the University of Göttingen. Topic of the habilitation thesis: Constants of case variation: on the alternation between the nominative and instrumental, and the accusative and genitive in Russian.
  • April 1993 Appointed to the C4 professorship in Slavic Philology (Linguistics) at the University of Oldenburg.
  • From April 1993: Acting holder of the Oldenburg professorship.
  • October 1993: Accepted the appointment at Oldenburg; appointed professor in November 1993.
  • September 2004 Appointed to a C4 professorship in Descriptive Linguistics and Interlingual Sociolinguistics at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) – Viadrina

Extended academic stays abroad

  • Oct 1978 – Jun 1979 Research stay at the University of Kraków, Poland, to prepare a Master’s thesis (scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, and the Polish Academy of Sciences, PAN).
  • Nov 1982 – Aug 1983 Research stay at the Department of German Studies at the University of Kraków, Poland, and the Institute of the Polish Language of the PAN there, in preparation for my doctoral thesis (scholarship from the DAAD and the PAN).
  • July–August 1987: Fact-finding visit to various universities in the USA to establish contacts with academics in the fields of Slavic studies, general linguistics and computational lexicography (grant from the German Research Foundation, DFG); Universities visited included Berkeley, Stanford, UC Los Angeles, Duke, Ohio State (Columbus), Philadelphia, Harvard and MIT.
  • From September 1990 to July 1991: research stay at the Institute of Linguistics of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Leningrad Branch (DFG scholarship).
  • April–May 2002: six-week research stay at the Institute of the Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków (DAAD scholarship).
  • June–July 2002: four-week research stay at Gerzen University, St Petersburg, funded by the State of Lower Saxony.
  • October–November 2006 (during a sabbatical year): eight-week stay at Minsk State University, Belarus

Role in academic self-administration

  • Head of the Subject of Slavonic Studies for over ten years; Director of the Institute of Foreign Language Philology for several years
