  • Baccalaureate in May 1972 at Hölty-Gymnasium in Wunstorf (near Hanover).
  • Served in the German Armed Forces from July 1972 to March 1974.
  • Studied at the University of Göttingen (4/1974 to 7/1981), majoring in Slavic Linguistics and minoring in English Linguistics and Slavic Literature.
  • Magister artium 7/1981
  • From 10/1981 to 12/1986 research assistant at the same university in a lexicographical third-party funded project on German loan words in Polish.
  • 7/1986 Doctorate (Dr. phil.) at the University of Göttingen in the above-mentioned subjects; dissertation topic: Vowel Perception and Natural Phonology. A contrastive study of German and Polish.
  • From 1/1987 Temporary Academic Councillor (position for young academics) at the Department of Slavic Philology at the University of Göttingen with duties in research, teaching and administration.

  • 11/1982 - 8/1983 Research stay at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Krakow, Poland, and the Institute for Polish Language of the PAN in Krakow, Poland, to prepare a doctoral thesis (DAAD and PAN scholarship).
