Review TdLL 2024

Learning spaces of the future.
Shaping the campus of tomorrow together!

Thursday, 20 June 2024, 10:00 - 16:30

Entrance hall V03 (B) and rooms of the Innovation Campus (V03)

To the programme

To the learning spaces forum

The central theme of the eighth Day of Teaching and Learning - TdLL for short - was the joint design of the university as a place of learning. At the centre was the question of how physical, hybrid and digital spaces at the university can be designed and created in such a way that they enable innovative formats of teaching and learning. The experience gained during the pandemic was to be used to reassess the link between learning culture and presence and to explore possible further developments.

We explored this together:

  • How do spaces affect teaching and learning?
  • What kind of learning culture do we want in the future?
  • How can the joint (re)design of spaces inspire innovative teaching and 'good' learning?

Programme

Oldenburg journalist Felix Zimmermann accompanied the TdLL programme.

Premiere of the short films on UOL’s learning spaces

The design of future-proof learning spaces has already been successfully implemented in many areas at the University of Oldenburg. Innovative learning spaces have already been created in the Institutes of all Schools, as well as in central facilities such as the University Library, which, through their respective designs, promote a wide variety of learning styles. To raise the profile of these learning spaces and showcase their respective potential, Claudia Lehmann and Max-Simon Gündert (University Didactics) have created the ‘Learning Spaces Forum’ format. In the ‘Learning Spaces Forum’, innovative learning spaces and their learning-friendly design are presented through short films. The ‘Forum Lernräume’ was launched on Teaching and Learning Day, and seven short films produced in the run-up to the event were premiered.

Special thanks go to the BIS media technology and production team for producing the short films, as well as to the learning space designers and the students for their contribution.

Learning spaces of the future: Post-digital and participative?

10:30 - 11:15 a.m.

Entrance Hall V03 (B)

Keynote

Prof. Dr Felicitas Macgilchrist, School I, Institute of Educational Sciences

Spaces shape how we learn. Spaces also influence what we know, how we communicate and how we live. But how do we design learning spaces today and in the future? In this lecture, Felicitas Macgilchrist reflected firstly on how current physical learning spaces tend to create order, reproduce hierarchies and suggest certain educational opportunities. Secondly, she explored the possibilities and limitations of hybrid learning spaces. Thirdly, she showed how a different, dehierarchised learning space can be developed and what difficulties can arise. She also noted that such spaces already existed in the 19th century.

Poster presentation

The SOUVER@N joint project aims to strengthen digitalisation within higher education. As part of this, three digital self-study modules were developed at the University of Oldenburg, amongst other institutions, to promote the basic skills of teacher training students in the subjects of General Studies, mathematics and German. A poster presentation showcased both the selected content and its digital implementation.

Innovative teaching concepts developed as part of the participate@UOL project were also showcased – including those by Prof. Dr Anke Spies (School I, Institute of Educational Sciences) and by Juliane Heise, Vanessa Barbagiovanni Bugiacca and Jaqueline Menke (School III, Institute of Art and Visual Culture).

Workshop

Moderation: Anna-Katharina Behrenbeck and Tina Zandstra, Department for Research and Technology Transfer, Innovation Campus

"Let's rethink learning spaces of the future together using the creative method Lego® Serious Play®. Together we can build visions and models, discover new possibilities and actively shape the campus of tomorrow."

The workshop was intended for all members of the university - students, teaching staff and employees. No registration was required for participation.

14:00 - 14:30

Presentation of the results of the workshop "Learning spaces of the future"

The results were presented in the last part of the workshop. The Vice President for Studies and Teaching, Prof Dr Andrea Strübind, was present for the presentation and there was the opportunity to talk to her about the visions that had emerged.

Participation in the presentation of the results was also possible without prior participation in the workshop.

Towards the campus of tomorrow. How do we design the learning spaces of the future?

2.30 pm – 4.30 pm

Entrance Hall V03 (B)

Panel discussion preceded by a keynote address by Alexis Angelis ( architect in Oldenburg, co-founder of the CORE innovation platform, co-founder of NEU_FUNDLAND)

Future-oriented teaching and learning requires sustainable learning spaces. The question of how to design sustainable learning spaces is so crucial because learning processes cannot be initiated or shaped independently of their respective physical environment. Whether we are in a lecture theatre or a seminar room, in the university library or a virtual learning environment, the design of the space has a significant influence on learning. Spaces should therefore, as far as possible, be designed in such a way that their layout promotes learning. The design of learning environments is therefore not merely an architectural task, but equally a pedagogical one.

How do we design the learning spaces of the future? How can physical and virtual learning environments be effectively integrated? Which design elements of ‘traditional’ learning spaces should be retained, and which should be updated or altered? How can learning spaces be designed in a participatory manner?

During the panel discussion, these and other questions were addressed and discussed from various perspectives. The panellists were:

Friederike Ulses, student, Master of Education (secondary school) – Protestant Religious Education and English
Dr Susanne Quintes, project officer at participate@UOL, School VI
Heike Andermann, Library Director, Library and Information System (BIS)
Alexis Angelis, architect in Oldenburg, co-founder of the innovation platform CORE, co-founder of NEU_FUNDLAND
Prof. Dr Andrea Strübind, Vice-President for Studies and Teaching

Moderator: Felix Zimmermann, journalist for *taz*, *Die Zeit* and others
