New Publication in Chemistry - A European Journal

The most recent paper "Stereoselective Synthesis of Tertiary Allylic Amines by Titanium-Catalyzed Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkynes with Tertiary Amines" by RTG PhD students Tobias Kaper and Dennis Geik has just been accepted for publication in Chemistry - A European Journal. The reviewers assessed that the results reported in the research article are "of great significance" (top 20%). Congratulations!

The article is also featured in the "Hot Topic: C-H Activation" section of the Wiley online library, and part of the Special Collection "In Memory of Klaus Hafner".

Oldenburg Symposium on Chemical Bond Activation 2022 - Registration Now Open

The 4th Oldenburg Symposium on Chemical Bond Activation will take place on March 7th, 2022 as an online event. Participants are invited to submit abstracts for oral contributions or the online poster session.

New Video

Would you like to learn about the photoconversion of 2-propanol on rutile titania? Then let RTG PhD student Jessica Kräuter tell you all about it in this new video!
The video shows the different setups which were used to analyze the investigated model reaction, which is of interest for chemical industries. It is based on a paper published earlier this year in collaboration with the Libuda group at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Publication in Angewandte Chemie

The communication "Titanium-Catalyzed Intermolecular Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkenes with Tertiary Amines" by RTG PhD students Dennis Geik and Michael Rosien has just been accepted for publication in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

In the paper, catalytic  intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation of alkenes with various tertiaryalkylamines and excellent regioselectivity at low temperatures is presented. The work was rated as "highly important (top 20%)" and even as "very important (top 5%)" by two of the reviewers, respectively. The paper is also featured in the "Hot Topic: C-H Activation" section of the Wiley online library.

The communication covers the conversion of alkynes into allylic amines within an unbelievably short reaction time of 4 hours, with broad scope, high yields, and excellent stereoselectivity to provide access to synthetically useful products. The paper is also featured in the "Hot Topic: C-H Activation" section of the Wiley online library.

Cover Picture in ChemPhysChem

The article "Electronic Transitions in Different Redox States of Trinuclear 5,6,11,12,17,18-Hexaazatrinaphthylene-Bridged Titanium Complexes: Spectroelectrochemistry and Quantum Chemistry" by RTG alumnus Dr. Aleksandra Markovic and RTG PhD student Luca Gerhards was selected for a cover picture in ChemPhysChem!
In the publication, the trinuclear [(Cp2Ti)3HATN(Ph)6] complex was studied. Voltammetric analysis showed six 1e oxidations and three 1e reductions. First principle calculations on TDDFT and CASSCF levels were used show that the ground state is formed by spin states of different multiplicity, explaining the observed electronic transitions in the UV‐vis‐NIR ranges.

New Video

Earlier this year, the paper "Insights into Spectator-Directed Catalysis: CO Adsorption on Amine-Capped Platinum Nanoparticles on Oxide Supports" was published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. In the publication, which was co-authored by RTG PhD alumnus Gabriele Tomaschun, the authors employed amines as spectator molecules on Pt nanoparticles to achieve selective surface site activation in heterogeneous catalysis. This was definitely not a "Schnapsidee"! (Schnapsidee: German proverb that describes a silly or impractical idea, often occurring after one too many glasses of alcohol.)
The communication "Intermolecular Hydroaminoalkylation of Propadiene" from our RTG PhD students Tobias Kaper and Michael Warsitz was selected for a cover feature in the journal Chemistry - A European Journal. The cover shows how the simplest allene 1,3-propadiene is employed in intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation reactions with secondary amines to give the corresponding allylamines in high regioselectivities. The referees attributed great significance to the reported results - less than a fifth of the submitted manuscripts receive such a positive review. As such, the communication is listed as a "Hot Paper"!

The communication "Titanium‐Catalyzed Hydroaminoalkylation of Ethylene" from our RTG PhD students Michael Rosien and Iris Töben was selected for a cover feature in the renowned journal Chemistry - A European Journal! The cover shows a simplified titanium‐catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation reaction cycle of ethylene with secondary amines in front of the Oldenburg Palace.
The referees attributed great significance to the reported results - less than a fifth of the submitted manuscripts receive such a positive review.

Workshop "Future Perspectives in Catalysis"/Poster Prize for Lars Mohrhusen

The workshop "Future Perspectives in Catalysis" took place 2nd - 6th September, 2019 in Bremerhaven. The event, which was organized by the PCAM-Network in cooperation with the Research Training Group "Chemical Bond Activation", included lectures, poster sessions, a fishbowl discussion and a think tank for PhD students.

RTG PhD student Lars Mohrhusen was awarded with a poster prize. Congratulations!

RTG PhD student Lars Mohrhusen was awarded with a poster prize at the 118th General Assembly of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry, which took place in Jena on 30 May - 1 June 2019. Congratulations!

The communication "Theoretical Studies on the Hydroaminoalkylation of Alkenes with Primary and Secondary Amines" was chosen for a cover feature in Chemistry - A European Journal! First author Luisa Stelter, who was supported by the RTG, obtained the published results while working on her Bachelor thesis in the group of Prof. Dr. Klüner.

Press Release: "Anaerobic bacteria as a treasure chest"

The University's Press & Communication department has published a new press release about the work of RTG member Prof. Dr. Ralf Rabus.

The group performs research on an extraordinary species of bacteria that degrade particularly stable organic compounds, without the need of oxygen. They thus represent a downright treasure chest for novel biochemical reactions, which could help in the remediation of polluted soils.

"From the witches cauldrons in materials science"/
Poster prize for Jessica Kräuter

The scientific meeting "From the witches cauldrons in materials science" ("Aus den Hexenküchen der Materialwissenschaften") took place on April 29th and 30th, 2018 in Goslar. We were again able to win excellent female scientists as speakers for the conference. The meeting was held jointly by the Center of Interface Science and the Research Training Group "Chemical Bond Activation", and was also supported by the SFB 1083 "Structure and Dynamics of Internal Interfaces".

At the event, RTG PhD student Jessica Kräuter was awarded with the prize for the best poster. Congratulations!


Research Training Group 2226 "Chemical Bond Activation" to be established at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has approved the establishment of a research training group (RTG) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. The DFG will support the project financially with ca. 3,5 million Euro, initially for a time period of 4,5 years.

Starting in October 2017, twelve PhD students will start their research on the topic of chemical bond activation.
