The completion of a doctoral degree at the University of Oldenburg follows specific regulations set out by each of the university's schools.

All important regulations regarding a doctoral degree in the field of educational and social sciences can be found in the doctoral degree regulations of the School of Educational and Social Sciences (Fakultät I). There are sets of regulations on doctoral degrees of the School of Computing Science, Business Administration, Economics, and Law (Fakultät II) for the fields of law (Dr. jur.) as well as for Economics and related fields (Dr. rer. pol.). The School of Linguistics and Cultural Studies (Fakultät III) has separate doctoral degree regulations for the Cultural Studies and for English and American Studies, for German Studies, for Dutch Studies and for Slavic Studies. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Fakultät IV) has doctoral degree regulations for doctoral work in the humanities and social sciences. There are two sets of doctoral degree regulations at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (Fakultät VI): one for the degrees Dr. med./MD-Ph.D. and one for the degree Dr. rer. medic.

Furthermore, there is a joint set of doctoral degree regulations for the Dr. rer. nat. of the School of Mathematics and Science (Fakultät V), the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (Fakultät VI) as well as the Department for Computing Science of the School of Computing Science, Business Administration, Economics, and Law.
