Research Vessels

An important part of the Coastal Observatory Spiekeroog are the three small ICBM research vessels Navicula, Otzum and Zephyr. They are specially designed for operation near the coast and equipped with modern technology. For field campaigns off Spiekeroog, the research boats of the SCO are an important asset for the support of the individual projects, e.g. also for accompanying measurements on the water as well as educational campaigns with students. Material and personnel transports, e.g. to the Janssand tidal flat, would be unthinkable without the boats. Furthermore, the boats are used to perform regular maintenance work on the Time-Series Station (approx. every two weeks).
