Dr Antonietta Castiello
Since my high school days in my home country Italy, I have dedicated myself to the in-depth study of antiquity. At the University of Udine, I completed both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Classics, specialising in Roman religion and Roman military history.
From 2015 to 2018, I wrote my doctoral thesis as part of the "Cultures of Participation" doctoral programme funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. The project, which was set up as a cotutelle between the Universities of Oldenburg and Venezia Ca' Foscari, was completed at the end of March with the thesis defence (overall grade: summa cum laude).
In the three years of my doctorate, I have acquired extensive teaching experience. At the Universities of Oldenburg and Udine, I regularly taught courses - some of them in English - that mainly dealt with topics of ancient religion, cultural memory and identity.
From October 2022 to September 2023, I was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Classics through a Walter Benjamin Research Fellowship from the DFG. The title of the fellowship project was "Bless you the god who installed us here": Religious Memory of The Palmyrene Diaspora".
Since April 2019, I have been working as a research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the University of Oldenburg with a project on the Palmyrene diaspora.
