Mentoring Programme
The mentoring programme of the Institute of Chemistry is a voluntary programme that runs alongside students' studies, in which professors act as personal mentors to a group of students by providing guidance, supervision, and advice.
During the individual meetings, students are encouraged to develop an understanding of university processes and the structure of the curriculum, as well as to strengthen motivation for studying successfully. Mentors offer guidance and support, sharing their own experiences and serving as confidential points of contact for their mentees. They provide particular assistance during the initial phase of studies and the transition from school to university, but remain available to their mentees throughout their entire academic journey.
Through this exchange, both mentors and mentees have the opportunity to learn from each other.
The mentoring programme is coordinated and organised by the Institute's administrative office. The contact person for the mentoring programme is Iva Bačić (iva.bacic@uol.de).
Objectives of the Mentoring Programme
For Mentees
- Smooth integration into the university, the institute, and the academic programme;
- Successful study and satisfaction with the academic experience;
- Increased motivation for academic pursuit and understanding of the processes within the university, the institute, and the specific academic programme;
- Mastery and proper understanding of the subject matter;
- Finding one’s place within the academic programme and field: developing and expanding both academic and personal competencies.
For Mentors
- Expanding one’s own portfolio of teaching competencies and mentoring skills;
- Learning from students: gaining ideas for one’s own teaching practice;
- Recruiting new researchers and scientists.
For the Institute
- Reduce dropout rates;
- Increase the number of graduates who complete their studies within the standard duration;
- Visibility: Attract new students and early career researchers.
Information for Mentors
Each active professor has the opportunity to enrich and animate the mentoring programme, acting as a mentor to a small group of first-year students.
- Students will be assigned to mentors; mentors will receive a list prior to the initial meeting.
- Students will receive their mentor's contact details no later than orientation week, along with an invitation to the first mentoring session.
- The first meeting between mentors and mentees will take place during the first week of lectures.
Recommendations
It is recommended to:
- Use "easy to understand language": Academic jargon develops throughout the course of study;
- utilise inclusive language;
- carry out the meetings with an advisory nature.
