Notes from the university

  • Prof Dr Willard V. O. Quine (Harvard University), one of the most renowned representatives of analytical philosophy, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of Philosophy, Psychology and Sport in May. His major work "Word and Object" is one of the most important philosophical publications of the 20th century.
  • The South American educationalist Paulo Freire was no longer able to accept his honorary doctorate, which was awarded to him by Department 1 Education at the end of last year. Freire died on 2 May and his wife accepted the honorary certificate at a ceremony at the university. The advisor to UNESCO, the World Council of Churches and the South American Bishops' Conference developed, among other things, a method for teaching reading and writing in just 40 lessons.
  • The now retired President of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), Prof. Dr Hans-Peter Erichsen, spoke out in favour of the assessment of professors by students at the beginning of June in Oldenburg. On the occasion of a meeting of the HRK University Senate at the University of Oldenburg, Erichsen also called for performance-related pay for academics.
  • The renaturalisation project in Emsland initiated by scientists at the University of Oldenburg in 1989 was included as an exhibit at EXPO 2000. The long-term project, led by Prof. Dr Dieter Schuller (Chemistry) and Prof. Dr Peter Janiesch (Biology), examines how environmental quality can be improved while maintaining agricultural use in an 8 km² test area with intensive agricultural use.
  • The universities of Oldenburg and Groningen are planning a joint degree programme in product technology in the field of chemistry. Graduates of this degree programme will differ from the traditional image of Diplom chemists in that they will also be trained in marketing, management and technology. Prof Dr Frank Rößner (Faculty 9 Chemistry) is responsible for the planning in Oldenburg.
  • In future, the university will be headed by a Presidential Board. This was decided by the Council when adopting the new university charter, which means that important decisions will be made jointly by the President, the Vice Presidents and the Chancellor. In the event of a tie, the President has the casting vote.
