3rd Oldenburg Teaching Physicians' Day on 16 March 2019

Teaching practice network continues to grow

Oldenburg. Last Saturday, the Department of General Practice at the School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Oldenburg hosted its third Teaching Doctors' Day. Around 80 GPs from the north-west, who are already working as teaching doctors or are planning to do so, accepted the invitation and took the opportunity to gain further qualifications. Prof. Dr Michael Freitag, Head of the Department of General Practice at the School of Medicine, was responsible for the day and designed the training programme together with his team. "Our medical students spend a lot of time in GP practices: during work shadowing, block placements or even for their practical year. Thanks to the high level of commitment of our teaching physicians, we are able to constantly expand our network and offer outstanding practical training," says Freitag. To date, 130 teaching practices have been part of the network, and now another 30 GP practices have been added.

The regular Teaching Doctors' Day prepares the doctors for their work as teachers and offers customised training for the different qualification levels of the teaching doctors. For example, new teaching physicians receive training on how to supervise students during a one-week observation period. Experienced members of the network have the opportunity to train specifically for the block internship or the training of students in their practical year. Another focus is on the exchange of experience between teaching staff.

From the very beginning, the Oldenburg medical degree programme has focused on intensive practical training that is unique in Germany - both in the clinical area and in outpatient medicine. The network of teaching practices is being continuously expanded. The School of Medicine is looking for more GP practices who would like to get involved in training students.
