Murdoch is one of five major universities in Perth. The capital of the state of Western Australia (WA) with its 2 million inhabitants is known for its warm climate, white sandy beaches and the relaxed lifestyle of its citizens. Due to its rapid economic growth and low unemployment rate, it is considered the nation's "powerhouse".
The university was founded in 1973 as a state university specialising in research and has 20 different institutes. It is named after the Australian writer and scholar Sir Walter Murdoch (1874-1970). Murdoch University offers over 100 different degree programmes. The university specialises in veterinary medicine, economics and environmental sciences. Murdoch University not only has the largest campus in Australia, it also has a very active student life with dozens of clubs and societies.
Everyday life
Within Perth, it is easy to get around on trains and buses or simply use a bicycle. Due to its geographical proximity to South East Asia, Perth and Murdoch University are particularly keen to maintain good "Australasian" relations. Studying at Murdoch is therefore a good starting point for cultural, linguistic, culinary and other journeys of discovery. Murdoch University offers the opportunity to live directly on campus. These are flats of various sizes, which in most cases are shared with other flatmates.
