Welcome to the January issue of the Graduate Academy's newsletter for doctoral researchers!

In time for the start after the Christmas break also we are back with our first newsletter of the year 2026. We hope you had relaxing holidays and wish everyone a successful, joyful and happy new year! In this first newsletter of 2026 we take a look at the workshops taking place until March and present events of our partners, different information as well as calls AND, as always, a highlight of the month - be sure to scroll to the end!

  • The BIS Digital Humanities Service offers a wide range of interdisciplinary services, such as workshops on individual methods, tools and programming languages (e.g. digital literary studies, AI audio transcription, Python), weekly open consultation hours, and a monthly get-together as a place for exchange, networking, and low-threshold skills acquisition.   • Startup Support for Women: Are you interested in starting your own business? Do you already have an idea? The “Gründungsheldinnen” (Founding Heroines) program, part of the EXIST-Women funding initiative, is here to support you in 2026 (subject to funding approval). Participants of the program recieve personalized coaching and attend workshops on topics such as business models, financing, market analysis, and target audiences.   • Neue Horizonte: Karrierewege promovierter Wissenschaftler*innen (New Horizons: Career paths of scientists with a doctorate)
    This panel discussion of BYRD (Universität Bremen) and the Graduate Academy (Universität Oldenburg) will bring together doctoral and postdoctoral researchers with scientists (with a PhD) from different professional fields to jointly investigate and discuss their career paths, decisions and key competencies (in German language). Date: 18.02.2026, registration via email is requested.

    How should research results be documented? How to cite correctly? How do you deal with image sources? The eLearning course provides answers to questions about correct scientific work Good academic practice in the doctorate. P.S.: General recommendations for dealing with (generative) AI in doctoral dissertations have been published by UOL at the end of 2024.
     
  • Webcasts on career development for doctoral researchers
    Since October 2025, we have been offering webcasts (self-study videos) on the following topics for doctoral candidates: „Becoming a professor!” as well as „Planning and developing your academic career. I'm off then! Ways out of academia!” If you are interested in one of the webcasts, please consult the website of the Graduate Academy to find more information.
     
  • Measures to ensure equal opportunities at the UOL
    Are you doing your doctorate with a chronic illness or disability and would like support during the challenging time of further academic qualification? Are you taking on family responsibilities during your doctorate and looking for guidance and support? The University of Oldenburg offers the following measure to improve your work-life balance:

Highlight of the month

PhD Day of Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Netherlands

Voucher available from the Graduate Academy!

The PhD Day is a longstanding tradition at Groningen university, attracting over 500 doctoral researchers each year. The upcoming edition with the theme “From surviving to thriving: PhD Pathways in a Changing Research Landscape” will take place on January 23rd, 2026, at the Feringa Building in Groningen, the Netherlands. The event offers a full day of inspiring keynote talks, interactive workshops, career guidance, networking opportunities, and more. More details on the program can be found on the PhD Day website.

A ticket (cost: 29€) needs to be purchased in order to attend. The Graduate Academy is able to give out a limited number of vouchers for tickets (first come, first served among those handing in the necessary information and a viable motivation for attendance). To have a chance at one of the vouchers please send an email to graduiertenakademie@uol.de with information on:

  • Your field of research and the stage of your doctorate
  • Your school (Fakultät) and your supervisor
  • A few sentences on why you would like to attend the PhD Day and a confirmation that you will really attend provided you are getting one of the vouchers

The University of Oldenburg will be present at the PhD Day with a booth: if you will have received one of the vouchers, we kindly expect you to come over and say hello.
