Along the boundaries of dialogue. Literary interventions in the discourse on reconciliation in the culture of remembrance since 1945

The conference is organised by the DFG Research Training Group 1608/2 "Selbst-Bildungen. Practices of Subjectivation in Historical and Interdisciplinary Perspective" in co-operation with the Institute of German Studies at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and is supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.

It will take place from 16 (start: 3 pm) to 18 May (end: 12:30 pm) 2019 at the University of Oldenburg (Senatssitzungssaal, Building A14, Room 1-111). The conference programme and further information can be found on this page.

In European cultures of remembrance, 'reconciliation' is unquestionably regarded as the best way and ultimate goal for settling historical conflicts between perpetrators and victims of National Socialism. Victims and their descendants, however, criticise the fact that this policy of remembrance overlooks deeper differences and thus blocks a critical examination of divergent memory and identity needs. In the free spaces of literature, however, the 'limits of dialogue' are often openly expressed, whereby expectations of reconciliation are disappointed and antagonisms are made visible as such. At the same time, this counter-discourse in the culture of remembrance sees itself as an offer for a dialogue about the irreconcilable and can thus specifically sharpen understanding for opposing positions.
