Fields of research
The research fields to which the projects are assigned do not mark strictly delimited research areas, but are to be understood as focusses that relate to each other in the sense of our research analytics.
A) Processuality and sequentiality: formation of dispositions
From a diachronic-processual perspective, this field of research is concerned with the development of physical, affective and cognitive dispositions that enable people to participate in the practices of various social fields by allowing them to adapt themselves to the contingent realisations of these practices.
II. Motive der Fügsamkeit. Zur historischen Semantik der Treue in der neueren deutschen Geschichte
Abstract
Wie in einem politischen Gemeinwesen Herrschaft und Gefolgschaft zusammenwirken, offenbart sich in Situationen, in denen der Zusammenhalt dieses Gemeinwesens bedroht ist. Zu den extremsten Herausforderungen für eine politische Handlungsgemeinschaft zählen Kriege. Um sie führen zu können, versucht der Staat, die in Friedenszeiten eingeübte “Fügsamkeit“ (Max Weber) der Beherrschten zu mobilisieren. Im Kriegsfall ist zuerst die Fügsamkeit des Militärs gefragt, symbolisiert durch den Treueid auf die Fahne. Doch auch über den militärischen Bereich hinaus tragen Treuekonzepte dazu bei, die Loyalität der Bürger zum Staat sicherzustellen und für den Krieg dienstbar zu machen. Vom Leidenden zum Entscheidenden. Eine Genealogie des Patienten als Entscheider-Subjekt
Im Zentrum des heutigen Medizinsystems steht der selbstbestimmte Patient, der informierte Entscheidungen zwischen Test- und Behandlungsoptionen treffen soll. Als „mündiger“, „autonomer“ oder „souveräner“ Patient ist er zugleich gesundheitspolitisches Ziel wie Grundpfeiler von Medizinethik, Medizinrecht und Arzt-Patienten-Begegnung. Ziel dieses Forschungsprojektes ist es, eine Genealogie dieser Figur des informierten, selbst entscheidenden Patienten zu schreiben. Dazu verbindet es ökonomiehistorische Forschungen über die Entstehung und Popularisierung eines neuen, formalen Entscheidungsbegriffes sowie der dazugehörigen Figur des „Entscheiders“ Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit einer medizingeschichtlichen Aufarbeitung des Umbruchs vom doctor knows best zum heutigen patient decides best. Das Forschungsprojekt untersucht also den Einfluss der neuen Leitfigur des „Entscheiders“ auf die Genese und Durchsetzung des „selbstbestimmten Patienten“ im deutschen Medizinsystem seit den 1960er Jahren und wirft damit ein neues Licht auf die Genese und Charakteristika moderner Subjektivität.
Traineeship. Ethnographic approaches to the practices of subjectivisation
How do trainee teachers become teachers in their second phase of training, the traineeship? This is the central question of this ethnographic study, in which Thomas Pille investigates the practices of subjectivisation of teachers.
B) Situativity: actualisation of action potentials
This field of research is concerned with the situated presentation of a subject in the sense of a re-figuration of actualised dispositions in a new context. The question is how the called-up action potentials are performatively moulded in practice as a concrete, socially constituted participant empowerment .
The physicality of recognition. Subject constitutions in sports and maths lessons.
How do school subjects constitute themselves and how do they mutually produce each other in the practices of teaching? This is how the central questions of this DFG project can be summarised in a nutshell.
Against this background, particular attention is paid to the concept of recognition. In order to make recognition practices empirically accessible, we operationalise them as addressings: The aim is to investigate how students and teachers use or confirm each other as subjects in acts of address by turning to each other both linguistically and non-linguistically, for example through a fleeting touch, a raised eyebrow, a slight nod of the head or by means of verbal addresses. more...
C) Transgressions: Transformation, criticism, exit
This field of research is concerned with the reproduction, transformation and subversion of the room for manoeuvre of shaping the self and the other. It asks under what conditions and on the basis of what capabilities people appear as critical-reflexive subjects and in which social fields and practices they attempt to expand or transgress the scope of the social.
Intersex Narratives and the Binary Order of the Sexes
The birth of an infant with a set of genitals that challenge standard notions of male or female is rarely threatening to the infant's life, but rather threatening to the infant's culture, explained sociologist Suzanne Kessler in 1990 (cf. "The Medical Construction of Gender: Case Management of Intersexed Infants." Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society 16.1 (1990): 3-26). This proposed 'threat' to a cultural binary order of the sexes has recently been the object of studies in sociology, psychology, gender studies, and the history of science and medicine. Furthermore, intersex and the question of early infant surgery has become a pressing Human Rights issue. The topic has been widely ignored, though, in literary and cultural studies. In my dissertation I aim to breach this gap and to complement research on intersex with an analysis of cultural representations of intersex and hermaphroditism. My focus is on selected literary and autobiographical texts from North America and Western Europe published between 1850 and 2010. I analyse their respective position within a multi-faceted discursive net (What is said about hermaphroditism/intersex by whom when and where? How does the narrative text relate to other contemporary discourses such as medicine, psychology, or activism?) I scrutinise concepts of self and subject (Which subject positions are claimed by the intersex/hermaphrodite subject or assigned by someone else? And, on what basis are these positions claimed or assigned?), and look at negotiations of the prevailing order of the sexes (In what way does the narrative challenge or reinforce the sexual order?).
Kunst und Selbstbewusstsein. Kritik des Subjekts und ästhetische Erfahrung bei Adorno
Dieses Projekt widmet sich der Aufgabe, den kritischen Subjektbegriff Adornos zu untersuchen. Er zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass er sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Philosophie und Geschichte bewegt. Dadurch tritt zu Tage, dass der emphatische Subjektbegriff der modernen Philosophie nicht in sich subsistiert, sondern auf die geschichtlich existierenden Subjekte als ihre Substanz verwiesen ist. Die Kunstwerke nehmen in der Ästhetischen Theorie Adornos die Stellung zwischen dem kritischen Begriff und der geschichtlichen Situation ein, ohne selbst das eine oder andere zu affirmieren und stellen so indirekt eine Verarbeitung des Subjektproblems in der Philosophie dar. Dieses Projekt widmet sich der Ausarbeitung dieses Problems in der "Ästhetischen Theorie" Adornos und bewegt sich dabei selbst zwischen den Gegenstandsbereichen: der Philosophie einerseits und ausgewählten literarischen Modellen andererseits.
