>> Dissertation project: "Bewegt werden: Readings of queer documentary films under the aspect of temporality."

In my dissertation project, I am investigating theoretical and cinematic positions on temporality and gender identity and the ongoing productions and interruptions of meaning linked to them.

The concept of queer temporality as a possibility for queer-theoretical intervention is central for me. Queer temporality is concerned with societal/social fixations of bodies/subjects over time, which are also handed down via narratives. The term is used to describe normative structures based on time as an organising principle and to develop ideas / positions to counter restrictive, normative temporalities that produce exclusions. In this way, the boom in discussions of queer temporality describes a search for temporality beyond (hetero-)normative structures and powerful occupations.

Film in particular, as a time-based medium, is scrutinised with regard to its potential to produce queer temporality, as well as with regard to the fixations it emanates in terms of temporal constitution. I am focussing here primarily on documentary films that take an identity-political and/or identity-critical position. I thus juxtapose the theoretical debate with the practice of telling stories in the name of a collective - a community - and creating visibility and representations. I am interested in which (temporal) logics lgbtiq documentary films carry forward, how they create visibility via temporal structuring, via narratives and where they - also via the medium itself - evade unambiguity and make identitary closures impossible.
