Subterranean estuary observatory

Within DynaDeep we will install a dense sampling and monitoring network which will cover the entire STE down to the saltwater wedge and be capable of withstanding storm surges, thus creating a unique Subterranean Estuary Online Observatory (see conceptual figure below). The observatory will have several elements:

A pole will be installed at the beach that will serve as an instrumentation platform. A camera system mounted on the pole in combination with drone surveys and manual surveys with a laser scanner will provide high-resolution information on morphodynamics. A vertical electrode chain (dashed line) will be installed in the subsurface associated with the pole for constant monitoring of electrical conductivities in its surrounding. The dynamic saltwater-freshwater interfaces will be located regularly by direct push vertical soundings accompanied by ground-based hydrogeophysics. Scientific sediment drilling and regular water sampling for environmental tracers (P1), redox indicators and organic water constituents (P2, P3), trace elements and metal isotopes (P4) as well as microbial proxies and key-organisms (P5) will likewise be conducted with a mobile direct push unit (crosses in the figure indicate sampling pattern). Multi-level observation wells (rectangles) to allow for long-term higher frequency monitoring will be placed permenently on the beach. Observation wells will be equipped with innovative sensor systems to generate high frequency time resolved data. An equipped container will enable online data transfer from sensors and serve as a storage for equipment and provide an information platform for the public.
