PhD student position
Within the German Science Foundation (DFG) funded research unit DynaCom (Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: from island biogeography to metaecosystems), we offer a
3-year PhD position: Theoretical Ecology - trait-based metacommunities
E 13 TV-L, 75 %
starting January 2019. The position is available in the mathematical modelling group of Prof. Dr. Bernd Blasius at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM), Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.
This project aims at establishing a theoretical trait-based approach to plant metacommunities, using a tightly integrated modelling and empirical approach. The successful candidate will develop mathematical models to describe the structure, dynamics, and resilience of a community of interacting species, characterized by a quantitative trait and living on a spatial gradient. Using the model s/he will investigate the cross relation between dispersal and competition for structuring trait distribution patterns, explore the dynamic consequences of multiple trait dimensions, trade-off curves and ecosystem engineering, and study the conditions leading to lumping in trait and spatial dimensions. Models will be parameterized and validated in a long-term metacommunity experiment on salt marshes and artificial islands near the island Spiekeroog, in close cooperation to the landscape ecology group of Prof. Michael Kleyer.
Applicants must have an above-average university degree (Master or equivalent) in Natural Sciences with a strong background in applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or related areas. Applicants experienced in the field of theoretical ecology or mathematical modelling are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be fluent in written and spoken English and should have a strong interest to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Salary and conditions
The position will be starting in January 2019 for a duration of three years. Salary will be according to TVL E13 (75%).
The Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science and encourages applications from female candidates.
Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification.
Applications should be sent with all the usual documents (included in a single pdf file) no later than Sep 30, 2018 to Bernd Blasius (bernd.blasius(at)uni-oldenburg.de)
