Cooperation with Mandela University
25 years of cooperation with Nelson Mandela University - a success story
The University of Oldenburg has been cooperating with its South African partner university, Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, since 1998. Originally established through the field of education, the cooperation is now active in many disciplines, with a strong focus on research and a proven track record of success. In addition to a continuously growing academic exchange and many joint, third-party-funded projects, the partner university is a sought-after and attractive study destination, especially for Oldenburg students.
The partnership with Nelson Mandela University is a unique collaboration that underscores a shared commitment to socially responsible research and teaching. At the same time, it is a visible and vivid symbol of the opportunities for international cooperation in promoting academic excellence and addressing global challenges of social change. In 2023, both universities agreed on a joint 'Roadmap 2023-2028', which sets out their shared visions and goals for the future. This roadmap has already led to the successful implementation of several initiatives, including annual joint workshops on writing grant applications for doctoral and postdoctoral students, as well as an increasing number of joint research proposals submitted to both African and European funding organisations. Since 2024, there has also been a special funding programme that specifically supports innovative projects in the areas of teaching, research and knowledge transfer that benefit both institutions.
