South Africa, Gqeberha: Nelson Mandela University
Application
The academic year at the NMU is divided into two terms: Term 1 (February to June) and Term 2 (July to November). Students from all Schools can apply to study at the NMU tuition-free for one semester. Alternatively, it is also possible to go to Gqeberha as a self-payer (tuition fees currently approx. 2,100 euros per semester). Existing co-operation between the NMU and the University of Oldenburg can be found in the subjects of Biology, Education, Computing Science and Economics.
Study
Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is one of the core partner universities of the University of Oldenburg. It is located on the east coast of South Africa in Gqeberha, the second oldest city in South Africa and the economic centre of the Eastern Cape. Even though the economy is booming and construction is underway everywhere, the inhabitants of Gqeberha keep a cool head and are considered to be extremely friendly and laid back. Gqeberha is characterised by its year-round good climate, beautiful beaches, a relatively low crime rate, strong economic growth, good educational facilities, large shopping centres and little traffic chaos.
The NMU offers a wide range of study programmes. The university programmes are spread over a total of five campuses, three of which are located directly on the coastal strip, the so-called Garden Route. The "green" George Campus (in the Western Cape) is also home to the School of Natural Resource Management. A large sports and leisure programme rounds off the wide range of curricular and extracurricular opportunities at the NMU.
All exchange students can be picked up from the airport in Port Elizabeth on request. As part of a colourful and musical orientation week, there is the opportunity to get to know other international and South African students and to see the campus, the city and other sights. The most important questions can be clarified and initial contacts made. During the academic year, the International Office organises numerous excursions into the country as well as events that offer further opportunities to get to know other cultures and people.
The NMU is committed to international relations and maintains contact with partner universities worldwide. Its philosophy is committed to the principles of the anti-apartheid fighter and first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. In addition to the language of instruction, English, the national languages Afrikaans and Xhosa are predominant on campus (and throughout South Africa). There are also up to 11 different official local languages. Cultural diversity is therefore also present on a linguistic level, and it is advisable to know a word or two in the local languages.
For students aiming to become teachers: If you are interested in a school internship, you should contact the School Based Learning Coordinator as early as possible and register.
Everyday life
South Africa has a culture that is strongly characterised by its own history and has shaped the country into a multicultural nation. Around 55 million people currently live in the various provinces. The official capital is Pretoria, but Cape Town in the south or Johannesburg (south of Pretoria) are often regarded as the secret capitals of South Africa. A good overview of the cultural, political and economic aspects of South Africa can be found on the country page of the Federal Foreign Office.
International students have the opportunity to live directly on the NMU campus as well as off campus.
Student housing at the NMU
On average, the monthly costs for accommodation, food, books and leisure time are around 6,000 Rand (1 Euro = 19.34 South African Rand, as of September 2020).
However, the cost of living depends heavily on whether you need your own car. Due to the lack of reliable public transport (especially in the north of South Africa), this is often the case.

Formalities & interesting facts
All exchange students must have insurance cover in order to enrol at the NMU. This is mandatory. It is also strongly recommended that you take out additional international or travel health insurance. It is also advisable to check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance).
