New event numbers

From winter semester 2020/21, new four-digit course numbers have been introduced at the Institute of Philosophy. The new numbers are intended to provide students with better orientation when choosing their courses. The aim was to make it clear from the number of a course to which area (e.g. Theoretical Philosophy, Religious Studies, Didactics, etc.) a course is primarily assigned as well as the level (basic, advanced or Master's level) or the target group of the course. The new numbers are made up as follows:

  • The first three digits (4.03. ...) are always the same and refer to all Philosophy courses.
  • The first digit after 4.03. (4.03.1...) indicates the level (in this case basic level)
  • The second digit after 4.03. (4.03.12...) identifies the area (in this case practical philosophy)
  • The first and second digits after 4.03. are thus identical to the module: 4.03.12... therefore identifies a course that belongs to the basic module in practical philosophy (phi120/phi121)
  • The last two digits of the respective number (4.03.1205) represent the consecutive number of the courses in the module. The lecture of the module always has the final digit ...01. Pure basic module courses end with ...02 to ...50.
  • If a course is assigned to several modules, the first two digits are assigned according to the module with the lowest level. However, the last two digits then begin with at least ...51 (e.g. 4.03.1251)

Examples for better understanding:

  • 4.03.1101: Lecture for module phi110/phi111 Theoretical Philosophy
  • 4.03.1104: Pure basic seminar for module phi110/phi111
  • 4.03.1254: Seminar (basic and advanced level) in the field of practical philosophy
  • 4.03.1301: Lecture for module phi130 Logic
  • 4.03.2103: Seminar (advanced level) primarily related to the history of philosophy
  • 4.03.2602: Seminar in the area of specialised didactics
  • 4.03.5306: Seminar (Master's area), which is primarily assigned to Theoretical Philosophy

Here you will find the exact breakdown of all new course numbers in a pdf file for download.

We hope that this new system will help you in the future when choosing your courses!
