Research Data Management
Research data in natural sciences is often characterized by large storage needs and many different data types. It originates from technical measurements and observations in laboratories and in the field, long term time series, simulations etc. gathered in interdisciplinary research projects.
Complementary to data, self-developed software is a constitutive part of the research process in many disciplines and often forms a research output in itself.
Research Data Management (RDM) in the School of Mathematics and Science is organized on the level of Technical and Scientific Equipment Services (Betriebseinheit für technisch- wissenschaftliche Infrastruktur; BI). Thus, the RDM-Service is interdisciplinary in the field of natural science and mathematics.
You can find an overview over all services offered by the university of Oldenburg under https://uol.de/en/academic-research/researchdatamanagement
Services
The RDM-Service at School of Mathematics and Science include:
- Advice on RDM practices and workflows in working groups.
- Training courses on general aspects of RDM for joint research projects, working groups, etc short
- Support in funding applications
- Data management plans
- Support using Dare, the universities institutional data repository

Network
RDM network of the FK5
A network has been set up via the stud.IP study group „Forschungsdatenmanagement in der Fk5”, in which staff from the school’s institutes and working groups exchange information on RDM topics in order to benefit from each other's experiences and to pool the interests and needs of School 5.
The network meets about twice a year to discuss current RDM topics at the university and to implement mutual training on specific topics.
Participants are also informed about current RDM developments at the University of Oldenburg via the working group's mailing list.
University-wide mailing list
The email distribution list fdm-info@lists.uni-oldenburg.de is used to disseminate RDM information from external sources to researchers and interested parties at the university.
To join this list, please send an e-mail to fdm-fk5@uol.de.
Working group FDM of the UOL
The faculty is part of the Research Data Management Working Group (AG FDM) with several people. This committee discusses current developments in the field of RDM both within the University of Oldenburg and at a national level. In addition, the working group promotes networking between the faculties and the central institutions of the University of Oldenburg. The RDM working group advises the Executive Board on RDM issues.
German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)
The NFDI is a national initiative of the federal and state governments to professionalise and optimise RDM in Germany. As part of the initiative, there are various discipline-specific offers and services that can also be used by members of the University of Oldenburg. The NFDI is currently organised in 26 discipline-specific consortia and 5 interdisciplinary sections. The University of Oldenburg hosts the spokesperson of the NFDI4Energy consortium and also participates in the various sections of the NFDI.
