Women are still underrepresented in almost all STEM fields and at all functional levels. At the same time, there is a debate about whether gender differences are constructed in the first place through gender equality measures. This is based on a conception of science in which scientific work is understood as exclusively objective and rational, and contexts of origin and social influences are ignored. This lecture shows how specific workplace and subject cultures in everyday scientific practices make gender differences relevant in the first place. In addition to the influence of managers and the media staging of science, the design of university teaching plays a decisive role. Aim: Overview of a) the aspects of STEM subject cultures that are particularly relevant for gender differences b) approaches on how teaching-learning environments can be designed in a gender-sensitive way in order to change subject cultures in the long term and sustainably.
