The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has highlighted the need for Ukraine-related expertise in Germany. The same applies to Belarus-related skills, especially since the public interest that flared up in the summer of 2020 in connection with the protests against the rigged presidential election has waned again. Last but not least, given the high number of people who have fled to Germany from Ukraine, country-specific skills are important in many professional fields and for social engagement on a practical level.

The Institute of Slavic Studies would like to address this desideratum with a certificate programme and various topic-related events and lecture series and create access to be able to classify the current processes in the societies in Ukraine and Belarus and their relationships within Europe.
