Language practice

Language practice at the Institute of Slavic Studies

The Institute of Slavic Studies focuses its language practice programme on the northern area of Slavia, which is also central to research. Polish and Russian can be studied as full languages in ten course levels up to level C1 (CEFR). The Institute also offers Ukrainian and Belarusian as two-level courses, which are aimed in particular at acquiring passive language skills.

For whom?

The language offer with the corresponding curricula was primarily designed for students of Slavic Studies , but is also open to students of other subjects via the Language Centre and the area of specialisation. This applies to all courses offered in Polish (1-10), Ukrainian (introduction and 1-2) and Belarusian/Belarusian (1-2). For Russian, courses from level 3 can be taken via the PB. The Institute's Russian 1-2 courses are aimed exclusively at Slavic Studies students; students of other subjects should first use the Language Centre's offer.

Which course is right for you?

The following applies to Russian and Polish courses:

Anyone who already has previous knowledge (as a 'native speaker', from school, from other courses, etc.) should take a placement test before starting the language programme in order to determine the best possible entry level. Current information about the Polish and Russian placement test can be found here.

If you have no previous knowledge of Russian, you must attend a preparatory course - a type of intensive course - which prepares you for the Russian 1 language level. Current information on the preparatory course can be found here. If you would like to take Polish without any previous knowledge, simply start with Polish 1.
