Frequently asked questions about tutor qualification
Frequently asked questions about tutor qualification
Why qualify as a tutor?
As a tutor, you take on an important role in university teaching. You support the quality of university teaching by repeating and/or consolidating content from courses for students in younger semesters. You contribute to more intensive support for students and act as a link between students and lecturers.
The tutor qualification supports tutors in realising these demanding tasks. As part of the qualification, tutors acquire methodological and didactic skills that help them to organise tutorials in a way that promotes learning. They reflect on their role as student teachers, deal with the topics of communication, learning and dealing with conflicts and work specifically on transferring what they have learnt into practice. In this way, tutors gain more confidence in their teaching activities. The quality of the tutorials is improved.
Who can take part in the tutor qualification programme?
Participation in the qualification programme is mandatory for all students who are leading a tutorial for the first time (Presidential Board resolution no. 222/14 dated 16/09/2014).
In principle, however, all students who lead one or more tutorials can take part in the qualification programme.
Students who will not be employed as tutors in the coming semester can participate if there are any remaining places available. Please contact the relevant lecturers.
How many and which workshops should I attend?
For tutors who are supervising a tutorial for the first time, participation in the qualification is mandatory. Please enquire with your supervising lecturer whether there are any requirements regarding the selection and number of workshops to be attended.
If there are no guidelines, we recommend attending two to three workshops of your choice in order to best prepare for your task.
What do I do if all the workshops are full?
There is a waiting list for each event, which you can join. If you move up and get a place, you will be informed automatically.
As experience has shown that not all students cancel their registration if they are unable to attend, you can still go to the course at short notice and ask the lecturer about the possibility of attending.
What do I do if I have missed the registration deadline?
In this case, please contact the relevant lecturers directly. They can still accept registrations if there is free capacity.
Where can I clarify organisational questions about my tutorial (room, media access, etc.)?
The first point of contact for organisational questions is either your supervising lecturer or the Office of your Institute.
Recording working hours: When you are first employed, Division 1 (Human Resources) will issue you with a campus card, which also serves as your staff card. This will be used to record your working hours electronically.
Information on the Campuscard for auxiliary staff
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of your Institute.
Lecture theatre and seminar room technology: You can obtain support for lecture theatre and seminar room technology from the media technology department. You can also reserve the key for media rooms/projectors there.
Copying, printing, scanning: On official business, this is possible with the Campuscard / staff card at multifunctional devices at all university locations including the library. Settlement is made via the cost and finance centre stored on the staff card.
Room booking: Generally, the room for your event has already been booked. However, if you still need a room, please enquire at your Institute's Office for so-called Institute rooms (these are managed by the Institute itself).
If no such room is available, please contact the university's room office.
Consumables: If you need chalk, markers, paper, etc., please contact the Office of your Institute or your supervising lecturer.
Can I also get support with the design and implementation of my tutorial during the semester?
During the course of the semester, questions may arise about the content, organisation or handling of challenging situations in the tutorial. There are various contact persons to clarify these issues:
- the supervising lecturers will help you, especially with questions about content or, for example, questions about the assessment of student performance
- in (super) tutorials for tutors, which are offered in some subjects, an exchange takes place between tutors working on the same module.
