The Lower Saxony Science Prize honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of higher education in Lower Saxony. Special achievements are honoured in the following categories according to focus:

  • in studies (category IV)
  • in teaching (category V)

Accordingly, the Science Prize is awarded in the following five categories:

Category I - Basic research

Target group:Established scientists from all disciplines at
universities and non-university research institutions who hold a permanent position
and who have achieved national and
international visibility through excellent contributions in basic research.
Criteria:

Outstanding scientific achievements that

  • a significant further development of the current state of research
    and/or
  • are recognised in the specialist community and beyond as a significant
    advance in knowledge and possibly the starting point for innovative

Category II - Application-oriented research

Target group:Established scientists from all subject areas at
universities and non-university research institutions who hold a permanent position
and have achieved national and, if applicable, international visibility through excellent contributions to application-oriented research

  • which open up application possibilities for research results,
  • which produce technical innovations (which may be reflected in patents or

Category III - Research in early career phases

Target group:Doctoral researchers in early career phases from
all subject areas at universities and non-university
research institutions who do not yet hold a permanent position. The
doctorate should have been awarded no more than six years prior to the deadline for proposals.
Criteria:This category includes outstanding scientific achievements in
basic or application-oriented research within the meaning of categories 1 and 2.
The respective scientific age must be taken into account appropriately.
Prize money:20,000 euros

Category IV - Student Engagement

Target group:Students from all universities.
Criteria:

This award recognises students who have distinguished themselves through special
social or interdisciplinary commitment in the university context

self-organised workshops or lecture series; social commitment or
voluntary work; family, culture, sport or student self-administration.

Preference should be given to students who have not yet completed their degree by the
deadline for nominations or who are not about to do so.

Category V - Excellent teaching

Target group:Lecturers at all universities.
Criteria:

The award recognises individuals who have developed and implemented
innovative teaching concepts and whose teaching style is particularly motivating
. Through their teaching, they should convey a passion for their subject area,
work with students in a practical and research-oriented manner and encourage their
motivation to learn. The selection process also takes into account the development and
use of particularly well thought-out, didactically prepared teaching and learning materials, innovative digital formats, the introduction of innovative
examination methods and novel counselling and support concepts
