Data Interoperability with Gaia-X: A Case Study on Water Data from Oldenburg

Modern technologies have revolutionized water management through precise, real-time monitoring with automated sensors and remote sensing. The resulting data varies in format, structure, and origin, posing significant challenges to interoperability. Effectively using such heterogeneous data requires overcoming both technical and organizational barriers.

This bachelor thesis explores whether and how the Gaia-X framework can be applied to integrate diverse water datasets from Oldenburg. Gaia-X is a European initiative that promotes secure, transparent, and interoperable data ecosystems. This thesis also examines how key challenges in water management such as flood risk, nitrate pollution can be addressed by adhering to Gaia-X principles. Furthermore, it demonstrates how the resulting federated infrastructure can serve as a foundation for a wide range of future use cases.
