Leadership in Academia

The Leadership in Academia programme is aimed specifically at professors at the University of Oldenburg in order to support them as managers in fulfilling their duties towards their employees and to promote dialogue between them. Junior professors, team leaders and postdocs with leadership roles will find programmes at the Graduate Academy.

There are various formats to cover the respective areas of gaining knowledge, skills training, dealing with individual topics and networking requirements.

The flyer provides more information on the programme.

Seminars and training sessions

Seminars or training sessions usually last between half a day and two days and aim to impart knowledge on leadership issues as well as practical skills, with varying degrees of emphasis. The sessions take place in small groups. The outside lecturers used have a wealth of experience in further education in the university context.

Dr. Beate Scholz
Shaping your own research profile as a management task (online workshop + individual coaching)

Short workshop on 10.09.2024, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., possibility for individual discussions on 16.10.2024 (afternoon) or 22.10.2024 (morning)

Objective

The design of one's own research profile is particularly relevant for appointment and evaluation committees, but it also serves as orientation for academic staff who wish to gain qualifications and have their own career prospects in mind.

In the short workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to determine their individual position and prospection of their career as a researcher. They will receive suggestions on how to incorporate funding instruments into their profile development and understand the perspective of review and evaluation committees.

A subsequent individual coaching offer provides feedback on a possible third-party funding strategy and opens up new perspectives through an outside view.

Agenda

  • Individual assessment & prospection: analysis of status quo and goals
  • Typology of research funding: Overview of the basics of the German and European science system & further development of the scientific career
  • Perspectives of others: Perspectives of reviewers and decision-makers
  • Handout for outlining the individual research profile
  • In a one-to-one meeting: Discussion of the individual research profile

Preparation

The funding programs presented are selected for specific target groups on the basis of documents provided by the participants. These are requested from the participants in advance by PEOE and sent to the trainer in a data-secure and password-protected form. Scholz CTC guarantees that the documents received will be treated confidentially.

Individual coaching

Individual coaching from an external coach provides support in demanding professional and personal development and change phases.  The University of Oldenburg provides funding to offer support to professors in accomplishing their many different tasks in the form of external coaching. The PEOE department has contacts to coaches with university experience and will put you in touch with the right coach following a one-to-one discussion with you. You arrange the sessions with your coach yourself, and the content of your sessions is also exclusively a matter for you and your coach and is treated in strict confidence. Once you have completed your coaching, you will be asked to provide some brief feedback for in-house evaluation. We recommend coaching to newly appointed staff in particular, but it is also available for experienced professors. The flyer contains more information.

Peer-Coaching

Newly appointed professors at the university are confronted with similar goals and challenges, despite all their professional differences, when it comes to orientating themselves in their new, diverse area of responsibility and finding a balance between research, teaching, leadership and administration. Collegial counselling for mutual support, networking and creative idea development can provide valuable impulses.

The University of Oldenburg offers groups of three to five people who have been newly appointed in the past two years the opportunity of moderated peer coaching. The participants meet approximately every three months on mutually agreed dates to discuss their own concerns and experiences in and with their own situation. The group generates the topics itself and works on them with the support of an external moderator.

Peer coaching takes place in a confidential setting.

If you are interested in peer coaching, please contact . A new group will be set up as soon as a sufficient number of participants have registered.

Coaching for academic teams

In order to maintain good relations with your own team, to strengthen the sense of unity within the team, and to be able to handle upcoming or recent changes or to tackle major tasks together, regular or one-off, situation-specific team development measures are useful. As part of the “Leadership in Academia” programme, coaching sessions for academic teams can be supported financially and in terms of preparation and follow-up. The premise is that the training or coaching is intended to clarify responsibilities in teams, avoid and resolve conflicts or support change processes. If you would like to use this service, please get in touch with the PEOE department at the start of the planning process.

Academia and Administration Assembly

Active dialogue and close contact between academia and administration is essential for constructive and productive collaboration within the university. Once a year, Vice President for Administration and Finance, Mr. Stahlmann, hosts the “Academia and Administration Assembly”. Professors from the University of Oldenburg meet with managers from the administration and numerous service centres, who are on hand for questions, discussions and debates.
