Specialist for media and information services
As a specialist in media and information services, you don't necessarily have to be a bookworm, because you don't just deal with books. You will be familiar with the individual stages that books and other media go through in the library - from ordering to inventory and cataloguing to lending. However, contact with people also plays a major role during your training at Oldenburg University Library. Thanks to your skills in research, information and media procurement, you will be able to fulfil all the information requests of library visitors.
What does a specialist in media and information services/specialising in libraries actually do?
During your training you will learn
- the organisation and maintenance of library collections
- the procurement of media or information
- how to use catalogues, databases and the Internet
- research in national/regional catalogues and bibliographies
- advising customers
- providing user services such as loan booking and user registration
After completing your training, you can work in municipal and public libraries, in public administration, at universities or in museums. Works and company libraries of larger companies, church libraries and publishing houses also offer suitable fields of activity.
How does the training work?
Training starts on 1 August each year and usually lasts three years. The practical part of the training is taught in library administration as well as through internships, for example in a public library, another academic library, an archive or a bookshop. Internships abroad are also possible. You will learn the theoretical basics on two weekdays in Bremen, at the secondary school centre in Utbremen.
What requirements do I need to fulfil?
Requirements are a good secondary school leaving certificate and a good command of German and English. You should be able to express yourself well both verbally and in writing. Accuracy and stamina at work are also important, as well as the ability to orientate yourself quickly and an interest in IT-supported work processes. As you will be working a lot in customer and user services, you should be friendly, courteous and confident when dealing with people. The profession also requires a willingness to constantly expand your general knowledge and professional expertise, even after completing your vocational training.
Who will train me?
The responsible trainer is Merle Vullmer, but the colleagues in the individual departments will also accompany the training.
