Administrative assistant
The tasks of an administrative assistant are varied and responsible. An administrative assistant researches and provides information, determines data and facts and compiles statistics. They also check the lawful use of financial resources. In doing so, it is important to take economic aspects into account and to work in a service- and customer-orientated manner. The university offers training in the specialisation of state administration, which introduces you to the various administrative tasks and gives you a comprehensive overview of the range of tasks.
What does an administrative assistant actually do?
During your training as an administrative assistant:
- Get to know the work organisation of a modern university administration,
- create personnel files and process recruitment procedures,
- check invoices and record costs and services,
- learn about and apply various legal principles,
- plan deadlines and monitor deadlines,
- acquire knowledge of budget and business planning,
- use the university's information and communication tools in a task-orientated manner.
With your specialist knowledge, you can work in many areas of the University, e.g. in the Divisions of the Central Administration or the offices of the Schools, Institutes and Academic Centres.
How does the training work?
The training programme lasts three years and is divided into practical and theoretical training blocks. The practical training takes place at the university. The theoretical training takes place at the vocational school in Wechloy and at the Lower Saxony Study Institute.
At the end of the second year of training, you will take an intermediate examination and complete your training after three years with the final examination.
What requirements do I have to fulfil?
A good secondary school leaving certificate is required. In particular, grades in German and maths will be taken into account. You should have an interest in familiarising yourself with legal principles. Logical thinking and a good ability to concentrate are also desirable.
What further education and promotion opportunities are there?
The University of Oldenburg offers the opportunity to take part in internal staff training programmes during vocational training. Special seminars are also offered for apprentices in which, for example, tips for exam preparation are given. In the event of a later career (at the university), the student can aim for promotion to the higher civil service by participating in external further training courses if he or she performs well and is interested.
