Why should you train as a chemical laboratory technician at the University of Oldenburg?
It's simple: here you will not only receive a solid professional qualification that will optimally prepare you for your future career. During your training, you will also learn what teamwork means, deal with current research topics and gain insights into chemistry studies.
What does a chemical laboratory technician actually do?
As a chemical laboratory technician, you will mainly work in development, research and production laboratories in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the food industry and in the paint and coatings industry. In addition to various fields of activity in the environmental sector, the area of renewable energies is currently gaining in importance.
Typical activities during your training are
- planning, carrying out and analysing (series) tests
- producing organic and inorganic preparations
- Operating, maintaining and servicing chemical-technical laboratory equipment and facilities
- keeping record books
- Assisting with the organisation of student internships
How does the training work?
The apprenticeship usually begins on 1 August and normally lasts 3.5 years. If your performance is good enough, the final examination can be brought forward by half a year. Usually, 2–3 apprentices complete their training together each academic year.
At School V – School of Mathematics and Science – at the University of Oldenburg in particular, following an introductory phase, you will get to know various specialist departments at the Institute of Chemistry (IfC) or the Institute of Marine Chemistry and Biology (ICBM). A placement at the Max Planck Bridge Group for Marine Geochemistry is also possible. Almost all training locations are situated on the Wechloy campus.
The classroom-based part of the training takes place on two days in the first year and one day at vocational college in subsequent years at BBS 3 Oldenburg. In addition, in-house training sessions are held one morning a week during the first to third years of the apprenticeship.
What requirements do I need to fulfil?
In addition to a good secondary school leaving certificate, especially in science and maths, a broad general knowledge as well as good German language skills and a basic knowledge of English are required. You should also be interested in laboratory work, enjoy experimenting, have a basic technical understanding and the dexterity required to set up the equipment. In the course of your training, you will work increasingly independently, but you will also be required to work in a team. You will also be expected to work carefully and responsibly.
Who will train me?
In addition to the team of trainers, the training programme is largely supported by many dedicated employees in the specialist departments.
