- Born in 1959 in Wilhelmshaven
- 1980–1985: Studied history, Protestant religious education, pedagogy and sociology at the Universities of Münster and Oldenburg
- 1985: Passed the first State Examination to qualify as a grammar school teacher in Oldenburg
- 1988–1990: Teacher training at the State Teacher Training College in Celle
- 1989 Awarded a Dr. phil. in History at the University of Oldenburg
- 1990 Second State Examination qualifying him to teach at grammar schools in Celle
- 1990–1996 Research assistant at the School of History and Philosophy, University of Bielefeld
- 1998 Habilitation at the Department of Social Sciences, University of Oldenburg (venia legendi: Modern History and History Didactics); subsequently, private lecturer at the Department of History
- 1998–1999 and winter semester 2000/01: Acting professorship for Didactics of General Studies at the Centre for Teacher Training, Bielefeld University (now: Bielefeld School of Education)
- Since early 2001, Professor of the Didactics of General Studies at the Centre for Teacher Education, Bielefeld University
- 1 October 2004 to 31 March 2026: Professor of History Didactics at the Institute of History, University of Oldenburg
