Show&Talk events

The Show&Talk events are a low-threshold exchange format on topics relating to digitalisation in schools.
In the Show&Talks, we give short impulses once a month on digital tools for school lessons, we share practical experiences and focus on ideas and perspectives for digital teaching. Our aim with these events is to reach school teachers, student teachers and university lecturers, but all other interested parties are of course also very welcome.
The Show&Talk format is geared towards dialogue: Join in the discussion, ask questions and be inspired!

The Show&Talks are free of charge. If you are interested, you are also welcome to drop by spontaneously:

Problem solving and human thinking: What is algorithmic thinking?

Problem solving and human thinking: What is algorithmic thinking? with Nicolas Arndt

Algorithmic thinking refers to a human thought process in which a problem is formulated and a solution path is described in such a way that a computer or a human can execute it.

In this course, we will first briefly discuss the term and then explore examples of how algorithmic thinking works. We will look at a simple task and formulate an algorithm that can be used to solve the task. We will also look at what an algorithm actually is and what makes it special. In this part of the course, we will initially focus on algorithmic thinking without the computer.

Algorithmic thinking refers to a human thought process in which a problem is formulated and a solution is described in such a way that a computer or a human can execute it.

In the second part of the event, we want to find out how algorithms are used to solve a problem in the computer. We will use an "Hour of Code" example to help us solve our problem with the computer!

OnThursday, 21 April 2022, at 16:00, we will give an overview of the 3D printer in schools. We will present various possible applications, from key rings to robot hands, and discuss existing experiences in the classroom as well as ideas for the future use of 3D printers. The event is primarily aimed at student teachers and teachers as well as people who are involved in school teaching.

Developing digital teacher training programmes

Developing digital teacher training programmes with Kirsten Gronau and Karen Vogelpohl

How do I organise successful online training courses as a teacher?

Teacher training courses are currently often held in video conferences. How can training courses be organised effectively and productively under these circumstances? How can trainers prepare content, take into account the social distancing of participants and promote a relaxed exchange?

The event is explicitly aimed at trainers who organise and run training courses themselves. The following content will be covered:

  • Overview of the tools and possible uses of the BigBlueButton video conferencing tool
  • How can exchange and collaborative work in virtual space (e.g. in video meetings and using digital pinboards) succeed?
  • Exchange on the realisation of a two-hour training course and a full-day digitally supported training course
  • What digitally supported options are available for your event that you can also integrate into future face-to-face formats?

Our examples relate to the following software and products, but can also be transferred to software from other providers: video conferencing with BigBlueButton, use of a learning platform such as Moodle, digital pinboard such as Mural and Kits.Blog. Previous experience with the software is not necessary.

Making digital teaching easy - The most helpful tools on kits.blog and digital.learning.lab

Making digital teaching easy - the most helpful tools on kits.blog and digital.learning.lab with Karen Vogelpohl

Numerous information brochures, websites, manuals, guides, forums, training courses, exchange platforms, tools and tricks - the digitalisation of teaching may lack many things, but not information and good (?) advice. How is it possible to distinguish the good from the bad, the useful from the "gimmicks" or free offers from subscription traps from this oversupply?

In our event, we will therefore take a look at the digital.learning.lab, which is an exemplary online contact point for clear, systematically organised suggestions, tips and application examples geared towards skills. The website can therefore also serve less digitally experienced teachers as a source of inspiration and concrete implementation in their lessons.

We also take a look at the kits (kompetent in technik und sprache) project funded by the Lower Saxony State Institute for School Quality Development (NLQ), which sees itself as a "pool of ideas, project platform and digital network". Teaching ideas, digital tools and exciting project ideas are presented on the website.

Notability in the classroom: from use as a virtual whiteboard to creating interactive worksheets for pupils

Notability in the classroom: from use as a virtual whiteboard to creating interactive worksheets for pupils with Nicolas Arndt

More and more iPads are finding their way into classrooms. In this Show&Talk event, we will show how the Noteability note-taking app can be used to create worksheets quickly and easily or how it can be used as a virtual whiteboard in hybrid or face-to-face lessons. This offer is aimed at all interested parties - no prior knowledge is required!

Produce podcasts with Audacity

Producing podcasts with Audacity with Anja Roß

Podcasts are a popular medium for entertainment and information gathering and are very easy to produce yourself. In this Show & Talk event, I will show you how to produce podcasts with the free audio editing programme Audacity.

You will also find out where you can download royalty-free sounds and music on the Internet and which tutorials on YouTube are suitable as explanatory videos.
Practical examples from my university seminar and a collection of ideas on how podcasts can be creatively incorporated into lessons round off the programme.

Digital tools in the classroom - kits.blog

Digital tools in the classroom - kits.blog with Alina Großmann

Teachers today face a number of challenges when it comes to lesson planning, especially against the backdrop of advancing digitalisation. Which tools can be used sensibly and easily for my subject? Am I even allowed to use them and what about data protection?

The "kits - kompetent in technik und sprache" project, which is funded by the Lower Saxony State Institute for School Quality Development (NLQ), has addressed these questions. This show & talk will briefly outline the project itself and the benefits it brings for teachers before taking a look at the individual tools - participation is encouraged! A special focus of the project is on language education through the use of digital tools; kits sees itself as a "pool of ideas, project platform and digital network".

Digital data acquisition in science lessons

Digital data acquisition in science lessons with Dr Timo Feierabend

Just like any other subject, science should also make its contribution to digital education. An important aspect here are systems for digital data acquisition, i.e. students not only record measured values with a stopwatch and draw a diagram, but also observe the experiment continuously and follow the development of the measured values on the monitor. The focus is therefore no longer on recording the measured values, but on processing and analysing the data. As in other areas of digital education, the didactic added value must of course be examined and weighed up.

In this Show&Talk, you will learn about a system for digital data acquisition and discuss the opportunities and limitations of this new technology.

Sketchnotes - pictures in the classroom

Sketchnotes - pictures in the classroom with Dr Timo Feierabend

A picture is often worth a thousand words. This scientifically proven fact can also help students to learn new content better andorganisetheirlearning process. Sketchnotes are an easy way to present lesson content graphically and implement it creatively. It's not just about creating blackboard pictures, but also worksheets or preparing for class work. Sketchnotes are therefore not only a tool for the teacher, but also for the students. In this course, we want to look at why images are important for the learning process and how the introduction to this topic can work.

Memes in the classroom

Memes in class with Alina Großmann

Angela Merkel with her arms outstretched in front of Barack Obama, who is sitting on a wooden bench looking up at the Wettersteinspitze, a dog with a hat in a burning house or a fistballing baby: internet memes have become a central communication mediumand are no longer just shared among young people. They differ from classic (political) caricatures in that they can not only be shared by all internet users, but can also be produced.n. Memes refer to social, political and cultural discourses. In this sense, memes are prototypical for the culture of digitality.

In this show & talk, an understanding of memes will be developed and their justification for teaching will be discussed, as well as possible application scenarios outlined and discussed together.

Hour of the code

Hour of code with Dr Nadine Dittert

This show & talk presents the website "hourofcode.org" of the non-profit organisation Code.org, which aims to get as many people as possible, especially children, interested in Computing Science. The website includes various self-guided tutorials that pupils can use to programme small things within a (school) lesson. The topics and levels are varied, so that different interests and age groups are addressed. From Year 2, snowflakes can be programmed with Anna and Elsa, in Year 6 a pizza for the 3D printer. After a brief introduction to the website, there is an exchange about possible application scenarios, possibilities and limitations.

Quizzes with kahoot in the classroom

Quizzes with kahoot in the classroom with Dr Timo Feierabend

In this show & talk, the website "kahoot.com" is presented. Here it is possible to discover quizzes and create them yourself. These can be played by the students on their smartphones together in class. There is no need to download an extra app, the students play browser-based. In every class, the students love this format of knowledge control. The quizzes can be used as an introduction, but also for backup or repetition. In the session, the website will first be introduced and then the creation of a quiz will be demonstrated. This will be followed by a discussion about possible application scenarios, possibilities and limitations.

The event is aimed at primary school teachers who are curious about the diverse use of robots suitable for children! Bee-Bot, Botley and Cubetto will be on show.

Digital Learning Lab

Show & Tell event on 28 January 2021 at 17:00 with Karen Vogelpohl

Digital Learning Lab

Numerous information brochures, websites, manuals, guides, forums, training courses, exchange platforms, tools and tricks - the digitalisation of teaching may lack many things, but not information and good (?) advice. Especially since spring 2020, teachers can't seem to save themselves from (especially online) offers - but how am I supposed to distinguish the good from the bad, the useful from the "gimmicks" or free offers from subscription traps from this oversupply?

In our event, we will therefore take a look at the digital.learning.lab, which is an exemplary online contact point and "repository" for clear, systematically organised and skills-based suggestions, tips and application examples. The website can therefore also serve less digitally experienced teachers as a source of inspiration and concrete implementation in their lessons.

Show & Tell event on 14 January 2021 at 16:00 with Alina Großmann

"Give me that part for that thing" - Presentation of a dynamic glossary for digitally supported teaching

Just as every discipline has its own "language", digitalisation also has its very own terminology, which is characterised by many anglicisms, abbreviations and co. and is therefore often anything but simple. In this event, a glossary will be presented that is being created as part of the DiOLL project at the University of Oldenburg. The glossary is intended to support you as teachers in the preparation and implementation of lessons with or about digital media & digitalisation in terms of language and offer a kind of orientation in the jungle of terms - it goes beyond the mere definition of a term by also providing examples of use, classifications and more. A rough draft is presented, which you as teachers can actively contribute to with your feedback so that it can be developed specifically for you and your needs.
