You can get involved in the committees and exchange formats of the teacher training programme to actively shape your studies! You can find more information here.
prx560: Practical phase - practical block at school
Prerequisites for participation in the prx560
- The prerequisite for taking prx560 is (provisional) admission to the Master of Education degree programme.
- Time unit: The module prx560 must be taken at the same time as the corresponding modules prx561 and prx562. The so-called project band module (prx566) must be attended and completed at the same time as the entire practical phase.
Pregnancy and credits
Pregnancy during studies and internship
The University of Oldenburg would like to offer students who are pregnant or breastfeeding the opportunity to continue their studies (including internships) without jeopardising their health or that of their child.
Information on maternity protection and the procedure can be found here. Among other things, students can find out how to report their pregnancy and/or breastfeeding.
Students can find further counselling services at the Family Service.
In the case of an upcoming internship, it would be desirable for the students concerned to make contact with the responsible person in the Didactic Centre as soon as possible so that the pregnancy/breastfeeding period can be taken into account in the planning.
Helpful and supplementary information in connection with practical school modules can also be found on the website of the Lower Saxony State Education Authority.
Recognition of school internships
Please contact the Examinations Office if you wish to receive credit for school internships you have already completed.

Application rules
Assignment to a school is carried out centrally via the office of the Centre for Teacher Training - Didactic Centre (DiZ). Independent searches outside of our allocation regions are not possible.
Hardship application
Students who fulfil one of the reasons listed below can have a case of hardship recognised for the allocation of internships in schools on proposal.
Students who claim a case of hardship will be given preference for an internship at their desired location and will be allocated with priority. Important: Even in cases of hardship, students can only be assigned to the practical block within the specified assignment regions! A prerequisite for the approval of the hardship application is the submission of corresponding proof with the application for the internship.
The following hardship cases apply:
- Caring for a child up to the age of 14 in your own household
- Caring for a close relative
- Existence of a serious effect of a disability or serious illness
- Studying a co-op subject at the University of Bremen
Further information - including the required documents - can be found here.

Note: The allocation region for the practice block is limited to schools within a 70-minute journey (by public transport) from Oldenburg Central Station.
Important: Information subject to change due to ongoing changes in school structures.
Allocation regions for the practical block
Dual function: Existing employment contract at the desired internship school
What is a dual function?
When assigning internships, the Didactic Centre is increasingly being asked by students or schools to assign the internship to the school where the student already has a contract as a substitute teacher or pedagogical assistant. If such a constellation exists, we speak of a "double function" at the school during the internship period. We ask for your understanding that the DiZ cannot always fulfil this request for an internship school = "service school".
Significance for the internship
Assignment to the school at which an employment contract exists may be possible if the framework conditions for the professional internships in the teacher training programme (see Niedersächsische MaVO-Lehr and the Niedersächsische Schulgesetz) are observed. This means that
- practical school training as part of the degree programme (compulsory internship) must be clearly separated from the employment relationship in terms of time, tasks and obligations. The time/lesson hours for the school internship must be completed in addition to the employment relationship.
- no substitute teaching or supervisory duties (e.g. break or bus supervisors) may be undertaken during the times/lessons scheduled for the school internship.
- the lessons planned for the school internship must be accompanied or reflected on by mentors.
Obligation on the part of the students
If a school internship is nevertheless to be completed at a school, the responsible clerk at the DiZ must be informed of an existing employment contract at the desired internship school and a schedule and task plan agreed between the school and the student must be submitted without being asked. This schedule must indicate which times and tasks apply to the existing employment contract and which apply to the school internship. During the internship period, the student must therefore work an increased number of hours at the school or the contract concluded there must be suspended for this period, e.g. due to holidays.
A reported request for an internship school = "Dienstschule" will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the overall assignments and the above criteria. The wishes of students and schools cannot always be taken into account.
Note on M.Ed. G/HR
Special note on the practical school module prx560 Practical block at school (M.Ed. G/HR):Due tolegal requirements (assignment in subject-specific teams, mandatory classroom visits, restricted assignment radius), it is particularly difficult for this school placement to take into account the assignment constellation placement school = "service school".
Important documents for submission to schools
Declaration of confidentiality
Student teachers are strongly recommended to submit the declaration of confidentiality for school internships. Students of the Master of Education Grundschule and Haupt-, Realschule are obliged to submit this.
Measles vaccination
Since 1 March 2020, you are legally obliged to provide proof of measles vaccinations (usually two) to the school management at the start of your internship. Persons who do not provide sufficient proof of two measles vaccinations are not allowed to work in the facilities concerned.
Please note that it takes 8 weeks to obtain full vaccination protection. Further information can be found here. If you have been vaccinated prior to your internship, you must take this into account.
It will not be possible to work as a teacher in the future without the measles vaccination. This must be taken into account when deciding on a career. You can find more detailed information on the website of the Lower Saxony State Health Office. Enter the search term "measles protection" under "Documents and downloads" to find the latest information pages including FAQs and documents for the medical certificate.
Extended certificate of good conduct for private purposes
Basic information
The Federal Central Register Act (BZRG), which came into force on 1 May 2010, introduced an "extended certificate of good conduct" which can be issued for persons who work or are to work in an academic, voluntary or other capacity with children or young people. The presentation of such a certificate of good conduct is intended to ensure that no persons with a criminal record for sexual offences against children and young people are employed in child and youth work. In this respect, students must now submit an extended certificate of good conduct for private purposes for all internships.
Applying for an extended certificate of good conduct for private purposes
You can apply for the extended certificate of good conduct for private purposes at your local citizens' office. You should bring the following documents with you:
- Form for applying for the certificate of good conduct
- Valid identity card or passport
- Printed assignment email from the DiZ
You will find a personalised "Template for the Residents' Registration Office for applying for an extended certificate of good conduct" in Stud.IP in your courses for the respective semester via the event "Registration for internships at the DiZ" after you have received the assigned school from your clerk by official assignment email. There it can be downloaded under the tab PRAKTIKA, sub-tab MEINE PRAKTIKA.
Important: We recommend that you apply for the extended certificate of good conduct for private purposes after receiving the official assignment. It will not be issued to you directly at the Citizens' Office, but will be sent to you by post. You should then present it to your internship school at the start of your internship without being asked. The university does not require a copy of the certificate of good conduct.
Please note: For school internships, you must provide the school with a current, extended certificate of good conduct, which takes time to issue. If you are going abroad with the plans, directly immediately afterwards to complete a school internship immediately afterwards, you must obtain the extended certificate of good conduct online using the online ID function function. Please ensure that this online ID function is activated before you start your stay abroad.
Fees and exemption
You will incur costs of approximately €13.00 for applying for an extended certificate of good conduct. An exemption from fees is apparently only possible for students who receive benefits in accordance with the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). Accordingly, you should have a BAföG notice to hand when applying in person at your office/citizen's office in order to prove your "neediness" accordingly (in addition to the enrolment certificate and, if necessary, other individual proof that would make sense for this request from your point of view).
- Information sheet on charging fees for the certificate of good conduct
- Proposal for exemption from the fee for the certificate of good conduct
Validity of the certificate of good conduct
"The Federal Central Register Act does not contain any regulation on the period of validity of a certificate of good conduct. This is due to the fact that the registration authority could be informed of a conviction shortly after the certificate of good conduct has been issued, which could have an impact on the content of a new certificate of good conduct to be issued. A certificate of good conduct issued can therefore only ever reflect the content of the register at the specific time it is issued. It is therefore at the discretion of the respective body to which the certificate of good conduct is to be submitted (e.g. employer, authority, association) as to how long after the date of issue it will still be accepted. As a rule, a period of 3 months from the date of issue is specified for this" (taken from the FAQs of the Federal Office of Justice)
The DiZ also follows this recommendation. If you have applied for a certificate of good conduct in previous contexts, please check the age of this document.
Further information can be found in the FAQs of the Federal Office of Justice.
Declaration and instruction on the Infection Protection Act
The instruction according to § 35 of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG) must be taken note of before the start of the internship.
Furthermore, the following document must be submitted to the school management without being asked at the start of the prx560 practical block:
FAQ on behaviour during the internship
Obligations of the students
a) Students must comply with the regulations in force at the school and follow the instructions of the school management and the mentors responsible for their training.
b) Students are obliged to maintain confidentiality if the facts that become known during their training require confidential treatment. In particular, such facts must be treated confidentially if their disclosure could violate the legitimate interests of one or more students, teachers or other persons.
c) In the event of illness or other absences during the school internship, students must inform the school immediately of the reasons and the expected duration of the absence.
Compensation for days of absence
In the event of absences for good cause, any internship days not completed should be made up for in consultation with the school management within the internship period or, if necessary, afterwards (e.g. by increasing the number of hours within the scheduled school days) or other activities (e.g. all-day activities, support area, extracurricular activities), provided that the days missed do not exceed 10 internship days.
In the event of illness, the school's Office and the mentor will be informed immediately. From the third day of absence, a certificate of incapacity to work must be submitted to the school. The missed days will also be made up here.
The fulfilment of the requirements for the school internships must be guaranteed. In case of doubt, consultation must be made with the examinations at the university.
When should the school internship be repeated?
The school internship must be repeated if the student
- withdraws from the assigned internship after the assignment procedure has been completed,
- does not start the internship or terminates it prematurely after starting it,
- has not completed the internship in accordance with the requirements
- is absent for more than 10 internship days for good cause,
- is absent during the internship without proof of good cause,
- was excluded from the school internship in accordance with point 6.
Misbehaviour
Students may be excluded from participation in the school internship by the school management for disciplinary reasons if their culpable, unlawful or unacceptable behaviour has a lasting negative impact on the teaching and educational mission of the school. The decision on exclusion is the responsibility of the school management in close consultation with the responsible teachers and module coordinators at the university and the Didactic Centre.
School trip, excursion, further training etc.
Further training, events and school festivals are also part of school life, and students can also be involved in these. Excursions may be accompanied, but the teaching aspect of the internship would be too small for an entire class trip.
Students may attend meetings and conferences organised at the school in order to gain a comprehensive view of the work at the school.
Substitute teaching, dual function
According to § 62 NSchG, the duty of supervision cannot be transferred to students. Thus, according to the law, students may not be assigned to substitute teaching on their own responsibility.
If the student already has a contract at the internship school as a substitute teacher or pedagogical assistant, the framework conditions for the professional internships in the teacher training programme (see Niedersächsische MaVO-Lehr and the Niedersächsische Schulgesetz) must be observed. This means that
- practical school training as part of the degree programme (compulsory internship) must be clearly separated from the employment relationship in terms of time, tasks and obligations. The time/lesson hours for the school internship must be completed in addition to the employment relationship.
- no substitute teaching and no supervisory duties (e.g. break or bus supervisors) may be undertaken during the times/lessons scheduled for the school internship.
- the lessons planned for the school internship must be accompanied or reflected on by mentors.
Insurance cover
During the internship, the students are integrated into the company's (school's) operations and are insured against accidents as employees in accordance with Section 2 (1) No. 1 SGB VII. It is irrelevant whether the internship is mandatory in the study or examination regulations or is voluntary. The employer's liability insurance association or accident insurance fund of which the internship company is a member is responsible.
