Important notes

  1. Make sure your documents are complete when you submit them! Partial documentation (eg. a transcript without a Modulschein or return sheet) will not be accepted - you must hand everything in together!
  2. We will only accept paper copies of stay abroad documents - do not submit your materials via e-mail under any circumstances!

What do I need to do when I get back?

Returning from your stay abroad with an excellent reference from your employer in Canada or a transcript from your successful semester in Ireland, you may think it is enough to hand your documents in to the English and American Studies Department or the Prüfungsamt.

However, there a few more steps to follow in order to get full credit for your activities once you are back in Oldenburg. The final procedure for having your stay officially acknowledged is detailed below.

Recognition of your stay abroad

To officially register your stay abroad with the Prüfungsamt in Oldenburg, you need the following documents. You can find them under forms for credit transfer in the sidebar, as well as under stay abroad documents elsewhere on this site.

  1. A Modulschein, either for the Master of Education or the Zwei-Fächer Bachelor depending on your current programme of study.
  2. Proof of the stay abroad – the original and at least one (unofficial is fine) photocopy. This proof may be in the form of an academic transcript of records, or it may be a letter or reference if you completed an internship or worked full-time. If you completed another type of training or language course, then you need official proof of the duration, content and that it was satisfactorily completed. More precise information about the requirements for a letter of reference are in the background information for coordinators and employers.
  3. A completed copy of the Return Sheet.

You then need to do the following:

  1. Fill in the Modulschein and the Return Sheet. The Modultitel is Auslandsaufenthalt; there is no short title or course number. Make sure you sign the Schein!
  2. Bring all three documents (Modulschein, Return Sheet and the proof of your stay abroad) to one of the "Blocktermine zur Anrechnung von im Ausland erbrachten Studienleistungen und Auslandsaufenthalten" (usually offered once or twice a semester – dates will be available on this website and sent via the listserver).

If you cannot make it to a Blocktermin AND you intend to register your Master's thesis within the next month, you can see one of the following people in their office hours - otherwise you will have to wait until the next Blocktermin!

  • Dr. Anna Auguscik
  • Lauren Freede

Note: this option only refers to getting credit for the stay abroad itself, and not to the transfer of credit points!

--

Any students studying French or Spanish at Uni Bremen who completed their compulsory stay abroad in their "other" language should make sure that both universities have the relevant paperwork - you may also need to submit proof of a stay in France, Spain or elsewhere to the Prüfungsamt in Oldenburg.

--

*All Lehramt students must complete these steps in addition to having any course credit transferred to Oldenburg (see below for further information). This must be done before registering for your Master’s thesis – please don’t leave the paperwork until the last minute!*

Recognition of a stay abroad completed while
at another German university

CASE ONE

If your stay abroad was completed while at another university, but fulfills the standard Oldenburg criteria, then you can follow the standard procedure for registering your stay abroad with the Prüfungsamt in Oldenburg.

To do this, you need the following documents. You can find them under forms for credit transfer at the right of this page, as well as under stay abroad documents elsewhere on this site.

If you cannot make it to a Blocktermin, and you need to register your Master's thesis within the next six weeks you can also see one of the following people in their office hours:

  • Dr. Anna Auguscik
  • Lauren Freede (substitute)

CASE TWO

If your stay abroad was completed and accredited while at another university, and diverges slightly from the standard Oldenburg criteria* (eg. two stays of six weeks each in England; work as an au pair but without an additional language course) then there are two alternatives.

(a) If you were previously a student at another university in Lower Saxony [Niedersachsen], you can follow the regular procedure for registering your stay abroad with the Prüfungsamt in Oldenburg (see above). However, in addition to the standard documentation, you will need proof that the stay abroad was officially recognised by your previous university.

(b) If you were previously a student at a university in another state, your activities will be evaluated and credit granted on a case-by-case basis only. You will need to contact Anna Auguscik or Lauren Freede (substitute) for further information.

*Regardless of which state your previous university was in, the stay abroad must (usually) have taken place in an English-speaking country to count in full in Oldenburg! If you studied or worked in English in a non-English speaking country, refer to CASE THREE below.

CASE THREE

If your stay abroad was completed and accredited while at another university, and involved an activitiy not acceptable according to the Oldenburg criteria (eg. a semester studying in English in Norway; a stay abroad of only six weeks in total), then you cannot normally gain credit for it in Oldenburg! Partial credit may be possible via an application for special consideration - please contact Anna Auguscik or Lauren Freede (substitute). Any decisions in such cases can only be made on an individual basis.

Exemptions and special consideration

See the information in the official criteria (page 3) and contact the Fagecchstudivamevenseok6beratungwphv (fachpnisrstudf+3ienberatung.ekwban8j1gloxei0istik@uxfaksni-oldeiunbuofcmargwh+.de).

Submitting your paperwork

Reminder: The paperwork for stay abroad credit should be submitted during the main credit transfer slots (Blocktermine zur Anrechnung von im Ausland erbrachten Studienleistungen und Auslandsaufenthalten) and not in individual office hours / by contacting individual lecturers unless you are within two months of graduation and need immediate confirmation.

The last credit transfer slot took place on Monday, 17th February, from 13:00-15:00 Uhr in A6-2-212. Another is not currently scheduled due to the Coronavirus pandemic - please wait until later in SoSe20 for further information.

Points to remember for all "Blocktermine":

  • Please bring all necessary paperwork with you - there is more information here and here if you are not sure what you need.
  • If you are planning to go abroad for the next semester, this is also an excellent opportunity to get your planned courses confirmed and a learning agreement signed - come and collect all the necessary signatures at the same time!
  • It is now possible to complete a learning agreement for internships in advance as well - use this form if you want to confirm that your plans meet the official requirements and avoid problems with credit transfer later.
