This module promotes a sound understanding of theoretical approaches, empirical findings and pedagogical options for action in the field of diagnostics, prevention and intervention in schools. The aims, procedures and possible consequences of diagnostics are discussed and possible distortions and errors of judgement are pointed out. Other key topics include psychosocial processes, communication, emotion regulation and various approaches to prevention and intervention in the school context.

biw310 Basics of initial teaching for special needs education
Compulsory module for students of the Master of Education in Special Needs Education

Scope: 1 lecture and 1 seminar
The didactic concepts for initial teaching and the transition phase from the elementary to the primary level of the German school system are presented. The concepts, programmes and procedures for differentiation and individual support in the initial classroom are analysed in depth and methods of multi-professional co-operation are tested and reflected upon. One focus here is on the approaches and findings on a reflexive casuistry of integrative teaching in the context of inclusion.

In this module, students deepen their knowledge of the institutional and organisational conditions for shaping school socialisation processes. With a focus on school development, the structure and history of educational systems and the development of individual schools in the local context of educational regions, as well as an exemplary examination of evaluation procedures, students learn to describe and analyse the institutional structures and fundamental legal framework conditions of the education system as well as the social framework conditions for the development of schools.

biw320 Differences and heterogeneity

Scope: 1 lecture and 1 seminar
Students deal with different relations of difference (such as race, class, gender, dis/abiltity) and the inequality and discrimination categories that are effective in them in terms of their significance for learning and educational processes and forms of subject formation. Students learn about school structures and routines with a view to differential, overlapping relations of difference and familiarise themselves with related research perspectives, for example approaches from critical difference and intersectionality research.

The module teaches skills for shaping educational processes under the conditions of impairments and disabilities from a special educational perspective with the reflection of attitudes and possibilities for action for the professional design of inclusive education. After an introduction to the different forms of impairments and disabilities, students are given an overview of the (inter)national discourse, the political and educational philosophical concept of inclusion and the educational policy mandate of inclusive education. They also acquire knowledge of selected knowledge bases for the design of inclusive education in school teaching, education, diagnostics, counselling, school development and co-operation.

biw330 Media literacy and digitalization

Central concepts of media education are developed and differentiated from each other, and the development of media-mediated learning and teaching is classified from an interdisciplinary perspective in social processes of mediatisation and digital transformation. An overview is given of the development of media and educational technologies, their characteristics and their impact and effectiveness for learning and teaching. The focus is on the use of media and the use of media by teachers in the classroom. In addition, specific tools and services (e.g. learning platforms, collaboration tools, digital learning materials) are analysed with regard to their didactic design and integration for planning media-supported teaching units and implemented in practice using small learning units. The Computing Science basics of digitalisation are prepared and implemented in a practical and didactic way so that they can also be taught in schools.

biw335 Pedagogical action at primary level

Compulsory elective module for students of the M.Ed. Special Education
Frequency: summer semester only
Scope: 1 lecture and 1 seminar
Students learn to critically discuss the conceptual requirements of the micro level based on research findings from empirical studies on the requirements, contradictions and consequences of pedagogical action in institutions and organisations of the education system and in co-operation with socio-pedagogical fields of action of the youth welfare system and to optimise pedagogical concepts by means of practice-related, casuistic analyses of pedagogical action. The previously acquired overview knowledge is now related to the forthcoming explicit practical requirements of the primary level.

Compulsory elective module for students of the M.Ed. Special Education
Frequency: winter and summer semesters only
Scope: 1 lecture and 1 seminar
The basic knowledge of upbringing, education and socialisation as well as learning and teaching and their psychological and social conditions acquired during previous studies is taken up and applied with regard to the references of pedagogical action relevant to lower secondary level (e.g. with regard to adolescent-physical education).For example, with regard to youth-specific prevention needs for health, consumer behaviour, addiction risks and crime) and related to the current discourses and findings of youth research and the challenges of youth phases and educational biographies in lower secondary level.
In addition, criteria and concepts for educational and vocational skills are discussed and the question of how young people can be supported in finding an individually suitable follow-up alternative is examined, taking into account the different types of general education schools. The causes and consequences of social inequality and their significance for educational action are also addressed.
