Equal opportunities

In accordance with the gender equality mandate in Article 3 (2) of the Basic Law and Section 3 (3) of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG), School I is committed to working towards the promotion of the actual implementation of equal opportunities for women and men and the elimination of existing disadvantages in the fulfilment of its tasks.

Discrimination on the basis of gender and the associated gender asymmetries at various levels and in various areas of universities are rooted in the conditions of society as a whole - but the functional mechanisms of the academic world itself are also partly responsible for the constitution and perpetuation of privileging and disadvantaging structures and cultures. From an intersectional perspective and in accordance with Article 3 (3) of the German Basic Law and the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG), it is important to recognise the diversity of people and their life situations and to counteract possible disadvantages preventively. In the context of demographic developments, educational and labour market policy challenges and with a view to migration dynamics, it is important and necessary to reflect on institutionalised structures and mechanisms that (re)produce social inequalities and, in particular, our own position. Change is possible through joint responsibility and organisation.

The decentralised Faculty Equal Opportunities Officer and her representatives from Faculty I are involved in representing interests in the committees of the School and the Institutes, and in particular in staff recruitment procedures. They are also involved in structural and strategic planning processes. In constant dialogue with and as contact persons for employees and students, we pursue the goal of identifying challenges and addressing them by raising awareness and taking concrete measures.

On these pages you will find important information and documents on the topic of equal opportunities. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The gender star* is used to draw attention to the social construction of gender and to linguistically depict the diversity of gender identities beyond a heteronormative male-female model.
