Organisation of the educational science modules

Priority-based registration procedure (lottery system)

Arrangements for so-called hardship cases

Prioritisation of Master’s modules

Priority-based enrolment procedure

In order to ensure equal opportunities for students when allocating places on courses, the Institute of Educational Sciences has decided to implement a priority-based enrolment procedure (random selection) in future.

In the priority-based enrolment procedure, places on courses (seminars, tutorials, etc.) are allocated at random, taking into account priorities and specified conditions (e.g. year of study).

One advantage of this procedure is that it gives students a longer period of time for the selection of their preferred courses. Immediately after the publication of the course catalogue, students have the opportunity to specify their priorities for the courses within individual modules and to adjust them if necessary. It is therefore no longer necessary for all students to enrol at the same time on a set date.

To which modules do these regulations apply?

The modules in Educational Sciences for which the School is responsible are:
a. the compulsory modules in the area of specialisation aimed at a career in teaching (Appendix 3b of the Bachelor’s Examination Regulations):
biw210 – Socialisation – Upbringing – Education
biw215 – Teaching and Learning
biw220 – Psychological Foundations
biw225 – Research Methods
These regulations do not apply to the compulsory-elective modules listed in Appendix 3b of the Bachelor’s Examination Regulations.

b. the compulsory and compulsory-elective modules in the field of educational sciences for the M.Ed. degree programmes in Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary Schools, and Special Education:
biw305 - Diagnosis, Prevention and Intervention
biw310 - Foundations of Early-Stage Teaching in Special Education
biw315 - School Development
biw320 - Differences and Heterogeneity
biw325 - Inclusion
biw330 - Media literacy and digitalization
biw335 - Pedagogical Practice in Primary Education
biw340 - Pedagogical Practice in Secondary Education

These do not apply to the modules of the Basic Subject-Specific Teaching Qualification. These are organised by the respective subject departments.

Registration procedure

1. Review of the course catalogue:

Once the School’s course catalogue has been approved, it is published on Stud.IP (usually no later than two months before the start of the term).
You can view the modules offered for your degree programme in the course directory on Stud.IP. (It is important that you select the relevant semester from the drop-down menu on the left-hand side).

2. Selection of modules / courses

You choose which modules you wish to take in the next semester in accordance with the examination regulations or your study plan.
- The examination regulations can be found at: uol.de/studium/pruefungen/
- The current study plans for your degree programmes can be found at: uol.de/studium/studienangebot
- Information on the Educational Sciences Curriculum can be found at: Regulations on the Educational Sciences Curriculum

Important: If your study programme differs from the study plan or if you are doing a part-time study, please note the entry requirements for the respective modules. The entry requirements can be found in the module descriptions.

3. Enrolment for courses

Lectures: As there is generally no limit on the maximum number of participants for lectures, registration is usually on a first-come, first-served basis.
In exceptional cases, however, the number of places in lectures may be linked to the capacity of the modules’ seminars and may therefore be subject to a cap on participants (e.g. biw210 Socialisation – Upbringing – Education). In such cases, places are allocated via the ‘lottery system’ described here. Please pay attention to the relevant information in the ‘Registration Rules’.

For all other courses (seminars, tutorials, colloquia), a maximum number of participants is set (usually 40 participants in the Bachelor’s programme; usually 25 participants in the Master of Education programme).
Enrolment for these courses takes place via the priority-based enrolment procedure (random draw).
In some modules, attendance at seminars, tutorials, etc. is linked to attendance at lectures in the current or previous semester. Please note the“Enrolment Rules” specified inStud.IP.

4. Automatic allocation of places

If the number of students registered for a course exceeds the maximum number of participants, places will be allocated at random (by lottery).
When allocating places on a course, priority is given to students who are in higher academic semesters than those specified in the study plan for this module, or who are eligible for the hardship provision (see below).
Students in the academic semesters for which the module is intended are significantly more likely to be allocated a place on the course than students in earlier academic semesters.
Please refer to the ‘Enrolment Rules’ specified in Stud.IP (see below) for the dates on which places on the modules are allocated.

5. Late enrolment in courses / changing courses

Once places on courses have been allocated via the priority procedure, you have the option to switch between courses within a module, provided that the course capacity allows it. This is generally possible during the first four weeks after the start of the teaching period for the respective semester.
Important: Please withdraw immediately from courses you will not be attending.

Waiting lists

Being placed on a course’s waiting list does not entitle you to attend that course.
Please refrain from making enquiries about this matter to the lecturers.
The quantitative teaching standards at the C.v.O. University of Oldenburg regulate the maximum permitted number of participants. As a general rule, a maximum of 40 students may attend courses in Bachelor’s programmes; in Master’s programmes, the number of participants is usually limited to 25. In exceptional cases, courses may deviate from these guidelines with the approval of the Programme Committee.

*Notes on the registration rules

Below, we explain how to interpret the ‘enrolment rules’. The registration rules specify the technical admission requirements for courses; that is, they define the conditions that must be met in order to participate in the place allocation process. These registration rules are summarised in what are known as ‘registration sets’.

a) Where can I find the enrolment rules?

You will find the enrolment rules at the end of the ‘General Information’ section for the course

b) What rules are there and what do they mean?

Registration is open from (...) to (...):
During this period, you can register for the courses or the allocation process.

• A fixed number of places will be allocated in the courses:
The course has a limited number of participants

• Places on the relevant courses will be allocated on (date) at (time):
At the specified time, places will be allocated via the priority selection procedure (random draw).

• Further places may be made available via waiting lists:
Priorities that are not considered may be added to the first-choice waiting list

• This rule applies from (date, time) to (date, time):
Specifies the period during which the following rules apply

• At least one of the following conditions must be met for registration:
- Degree is a Master of Education (Special Educational Needs)
- Degree is a Master of Education (Grammar School)
- Degree is a Master of Education (Hauptschule and Realschule)
In this case, you must be enrolled on one of the specified degree programmes to take part in the allocation process; further specification is possible here, e.g. degree is a Master of Education (Gymnasium) and the subject is German and the semester is at least 1

• Registration for a maximum of 1 course from the registration set is permitted:
Only one course from this registration set will be allocated.

• Registration is only permitted for participants in the course: (course number, title, semester):
Participation in the allocation process requires attendance at the specified course.

• The following groups will be given priority in the allocationof places:
Here, groups can be defined whose priorities are to be given preferential consideration when places are allocated (e.g. students in higher semesters)

Regulations for so-called "hardship cases"

The procedure outlined below refers to the modules/events in the area of Educational Sciences modules/events, insofar as these are the responsibility of the Institute of Educational Sciences (all modules labelled "biw").

When allocating places, students with a so-called "hardship reason" are given priority.
Students who can prove a hardship reason are entered on an anonymised list in Stud.IP and given priority in the allocation of places in the registration procedure according to priorities (lottery procedure).
Early enrolment in the course or enrolment after the automatic allocation of places has expired will not (no longer) take place.

Criteria and proof for a "hardship case"

  • Serious long-term illness or disability
Proof: e.g. current certificate from the doctor stating the duration of the illness, severely disabled person's pass
  • Caring for a child up to the age of 14 in your own household.
Proof: e.g. birth certificate of the youngest child
  • Caring for close relatives (parents, parents-in-law, spouse, partner, siblings or children)
Proof: e.g. certificate from the health insurance company about the care and the effort to be made
  • Students of a cooperative subject at the University of Bremen
    Proof: e.g. enrolment certificate
  • Active participation in the committees of School I, the Institutes of Education, Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation or Social Sciences
  • Important! An academic appointment is not considered a case of hardship

Application

An informal proposal must be submitted by email to
. Please attach a file with scanned or photographed evidence (see above) to your email. The submitted evidence will of course be treated confidentially and will be deleted immediately upon receipt.
Proposals must be submitted no later than 3 days before the allocation of event places (exact date can be found in the registration rules).

There is no general entitlement to consideration of the hardship application; it depends, among other things, on the available capacities in the courses.

Bringing forward master modules

The procedure outlined below refers to the modules/events in the area of Educational Sciences modules/events, insofar as these are the responsibility of the Institute of Educational Sciences (all modules labelled "biw").

On proposal, students of the corresponding Bachelor's degree programmes can take Master's modules early and complete module examinations of up to a total of 30 credit points.
